I haven't been on the Café much the last few months as I've been really busy with my workload this semester in college, however I have been able to keep in touch with the magic community through this documentary I've been shooting. I took a course on documentaries and decided that mine would cover the effects that technology in the 21st century (internet, television, youtube) is having on the magic industry. Here's the link if you'd like to check it out. Hope you enjoy.

Nice job. Good subject.
From a technical standpoint, here's what jumped out at me: A - The volume of the audio needs to be consistent. B - The title boards of the various sections appear for a few seconds too long (for my taste, anyway). The best parts of the documentary for me were the interviews, especially those interviews conducted with folks who were not fiddling with cards or coins or actually trying various moves as they spoke. You could have also, for my taste, focused less on tricks in general. It seems as if the Internet in general, and YouTube specifically, were the focus of your documentary, although the subject implies much more. You might have asked yourself the following questions, and then followed the trail of the answers: - How have digital devices affected magic? (Twitter, texting, cellphone, PDAs, smartphones, and GPS devices [e.g., easing the flow of information; overt use of digital devices in the performance of magic; covert use of digital devices, etc.)? Each one of these could be examined. - How has the PC impacted magic, besides merely providing access to YouTube? Perhaps greater examination of the non-Internet impact. - How has modern technology impacted stage illusions (lasers, lighting, audio devices, metal memory, etc)? - Has television (although like lasers, certainly not a 21st century invention) come to influence more spectators? Do they expect more from live acts? Have exposures on TV hurt the Art? Why/why not? - Is there anything REALLY new? You picked a great subject, and you picked several excellent interviewees. I think that's where you need to focus with future documentaries. Good luck! Phil |
