I recently bought a 3 in one quarter just out of sure curiousty. I borrowed a quarter switched it, then someone relized it wasnt their quarter.
They tell me... Mine was a Kentucky quarter. that's a plain quarter...... I have never even thought bout having this problem. Has anywone come across this problem? if so, what did ya do? Can you get new quarter shimshells?

Once the smoke clears there will literally be 50 different quarters in current circulation. This can wreak havoc on cigarette through quarter, quarter in bottle, Blaines quarter tricks that bites (sorry couldn't resist) and any other trick involving a switch.
My advice is to borrow a quarter and do some sleight-of-hand trick with it. That will give you time to see if it matches any gaffs you have. If so, then you know what your next trick will be, if not...let me show you something with a fifty cent piece.

i know the impact is stronger if done with their money but for regular coin tricks i usually just use the half dollars that I carry. I just tell them it's so they can see it better, more clearly. I do think that cig thru quarter is much stronger if the switch is done

I have had that problem before. Sometimes, I ask for an old quarter I say, "It's easier to bite."

For "Cig-thru-Quarter" If I'm handed a "New" Coin I tell them It only works with the "Old" quarters, Because they have more copper in them, As I use friction and heat as a means to penetrate the coin.
If they don't have a "old" quarter then I carry a few of my own. And I tell them that they get to keep the coin when I'm done. they get to check out the coin before and keep it after. I did this one time with my quarter and the lady at the table got up and followed me through the restaurant asking me how I did the trick ....LOL Best Joe

Usually, after I do the switch with a new coin, I try to only show the heads side, and I think only once did somebody catch that that wasn't their quarter.

Hey folks,
Jason tipped a wonderful idea about this problem in an email. If we all ask nicely he might post his solution to this problem. If I were a working magician I would use his solution. Nothing like using magic to solve a problem Might start by sending him a PM
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I don't understand, why not just post and share it? If I had a good idea for this I'd share... isn't that why were here? Sorry... just a bit confused... its not like a new gimmick or routine or something.

Hey guys,
First I have no problem sharing Chess. I have been away working a convention the last four days so I wasn't aware of this thread. Secondly it is part of a routine of mine. I have been using it ever since they started coming out with the new quarters. I make my living from magic so you can understand that I may be reluctant at times to give away my solutions to certain problems. Daniel, I ran into the exact problem you mentioned many times before I came up with this handling. It has solved the issue for me as well as adding a phase to the routine that I use it for. So without any further ado, here it is in excerpt ..Take an old style quarter with a small bit of silver leaf paint on it. You can find this stuff at craft stores. The painted coin starts off in right hand finger-palm. Pick up the new style quarter with the right fingers and act as though you are examining it closely. Now you are going to switch in the painted coin for the regular coin. I use what I call a Flash switch. This is a modified version of Richard Kaufman’s “Visual Drop Switch” found in ‘Coinmagic’. Kaufman’s switch requires the concealed coin to be clipped between the middle finger and thumb prior to the switch. It also requires you to maneuver the same coin from finger-palm to the clipped position. I basically eliminated the re-positioning. I, instead, drop the coin straight from finger-palm onto the left hand. After the switch the coin that is clipped in the right is allowed to fall (via gravity) into a finger-palm position. Any type of switch would work, Geoff Latta's turnover switch is what I used for a while but I digress. The main issue is that the coin remains fairly visible throughout the action of the switch. Start scratching off the leaf paint to make a little silver dust saying something to the effect that the government had coins plated with a new image to save on the cost of minting brand new coins. You then show the coin to be an older one. Fairly straight forward and simple but it works for me. You can ditch the concealed coin any way you want. Jason |

Bravo Jason, that's inspired!
It has the potential to cause people to look closer at the everyday things they take for granted. It could also feed the delusions of some paranoid types (I used to keep a small microphone on a wire attached to the inside of a TT for just this purpose. With it, you could reach into any floral centerpiece, or up under any lampshade, and verify the suspicion that the room was "bugged") Thanks for sharing!

Jason,
Brilliant idea! How about using a pocket knife or fingernail clipper to scratch off the paint? It would give you a good reason to reach into your pocket and ditch the "new" quarter. |

If you can get in touch with SASCO, you can get them to make the gaff you need with a new quarter. The heads sides of all the new quarters are all basically the same, so this will solve your problem.
In times like these, sometimes you have to carry extra material with you. For an example, look at the way Billy McComb is set up for the ring on the stick. Check his book for the info.
