I can remember my first time going to an IBM meeting at the age of about 12 I was so excited. I have gotten older now and not so much anymore. A problem I have with clubs is that we are to polite. We don't tell people when they suck. I think it is twofold in that they don't tell us when we suck. If I show you a trick and I leak. I show you a trick and its boring or I flash and you don't say anything your not my friend. I want to know when I am bad or I make a mistake. All the people that are my close friends want and expect to be told if they flash, leak are boring or anything else that is bad. I think we could all learn from how Toastmasters conduct the meetings they have. As for contests I don't like them much either as acts tend to be structured to win and not really for the real world. OK I am done ranting.

I also dislike how people judge you on the "number of clever effects" you do. For example, I did "do as I do"straight out of Royal Road. I got no reaction at all just : "Ow, that's selfworking" and "that one is as old as the hills".
Magicians in general amuse me . I love to be critiqued. But to be honest: effectwise I rather get critiqued by laymen then magicians. Sleightwise/techniquewise, I like to be critiqued by magicians though. |

A point well taken Michiel. The laymen at the end of the day are the real judge. I don't have to have a magician tell me if an effect is good or bad Just the look on peoples faces will tell the tale.
