... I picked up a couple of Jumbo Bicycle Decks at my club's annual auctions a few years back (2 red decks and a blue deck), but now I'm looking for effects that I could do with "straight" jumbo cards, i.e. no double facers, double backs, double pipped, etc, just normal jumbos. I'm noticing that most regular card work doesn’t translate because the cards are so darn big and awkward! Pick a card tricks, shuffling, and most sleights just don't work. So far I've found a self-working spelling trick in a Frank Garcia book that just uses 10 cards, so it handles well. Any other suggestions, both published and open-source (so I could get started?) Thanks!

If your hands are large enough, you should be able to perform a Hindu Shuffle, and all the variations. You should also be able to perform some false counts, like the Elmsley, or Jordan. So the first thing to do is to take stock of the sleights you CAN perform with jumbos, like the double lift (which means you can do most ambitious card routines, Color Monte, etc.).
My "Cards Across Variations" from my Mini-Mysteries Magic Section, Book 3 contains effects that can be done with jumbo cards. I also have "Space Thought" in Book 2 of the same section which works BEST with jumbos. And there is "Force Field" described in The Wizards' Journal #18 which adds a good way to force a jumbo to your arsenal (you can ignore the Halloween face cards and perform it with any normal card faces). In fact, you soon may be scrounging around looking for MORE Jumbo Decks at auctions and flea markets.

A few years ago I had a ACAAN routine published in The Linking Ring. If you can dig up a copy it's a great little trick and the move works better because it's a jumbo deck. The routine was designed for platform use with a jumbo deck.

- The Irish 3 Card Trick by Joe Riding - not only the best ever Jumbo Card effect (using 4 cards) but also Ken Brooke's most popular selling item during his many years in business. (1978)
- Jumbo Card Act - by Joe Riding. (1983) - Jumbo Jets - 3 different close up Jumbo Card effects (includes the routine 'can you see thru it yet?' which was performed by Paul Daniels on TV). (1981)

If you have small hands and you need to force a card use a criss cross.

Hi Issac,
Can you tell us which month Linking Ring your routine can be found. I have Linking Ring magazines going back about 3 years. Is that enough? Thanks Quote: On 2011-01-23 22:32, isaaclouie wrote:

Last week, I found a jumbo deck in one of my drawers. While playing around with it, my wife asked if I could do Chicago Opener (Red hot mama) with it.
I said I didn't think so, then I proceed to tell her I would try. Though a bit awkward, (with my small hands) it played very "big". Will practice / rehearse with it, and include it in some of my summer programs.

I have a "Comedy Jumbo Cards Across" routine that I've been performing for years. It uses a jumbo deck (doesn't have to be complete), requires no sleights or gimmicks, and can use as many as 5 volunteers (or as few as two). PM me if you'd like to know more. TED |
