There are effects that involve the production of an item that is in your hand from the start. No fancy gimmicks or steals just a held concealed object. Plucked out of the air, ear or whatever. I used to never really to do this because I figured it was so obvious. People have called me out on it to when I tried it. Yet I realized it depends on your presentation and the situation. Most of all surprize! If you have an item in your hand and they ask you to do something. Making sure they do not know about the coin or whatever concealed. I have found that you can amaze them with it coming from their ear. If you have good patter I suppose it would work in that case as well. On stage the audience does not know what to expect as their is no direct social contact as present in a one on one situation. I think I could really experiment with these things and see what I come up with.

However I was wondering if in close up to friends situations a more convincing production might be to just produce it. Doing so without a big show or explaining to them to look. Just reaching out like it's common place. Probably more convincing and if not you don't look stupid since you didn't make a show of it.

This is good thinking, Jeremy.
I mentioned something about this in connection with a video someone did of his early attempts at a manipulation act. There is a principle at work when you perform called "the silent script." Some performers write this out, others simply do it by instinct. The silent script is basically what the performer should be thinking while he is performing a trick or routine, or a part of a trick or routine. For example, if you are supposed to be producing an object out of thin air, you would look at the point in the air where the object is apparently becoming visible to you and think "I think I see something." You might take this further and think, "I wonder what that is." Then "I'll take a closer look at it." (reach out to take the obect). "Ah! I have it!" (look at the still-invisible object and then produce it) "So THAT'S what it is." You don't actually say any of that. You just THINK it. You might say something like this -- "What's that?" (looking at a point near the spectator's ear). Then you produce it (thinking all the proper thoughts) and show it to the spectator. This is basically an acting technique. If you want to explore this further, read Magic and Showmanship -- a Handbook for Conjurers by Henning Nelms.

In my "Medieval Strolling" days I had great success with making "non-visible" objects maifest rtaher than producing them. The story that our world is filled with many objects like coins whose natural state is Non-Visible seesma cceptable to most folks. I make them visible with wramth and motion, but must be careful lest they slip back into their natural state.
Somehow, the mind-set of dealing with Non-Visible coins opens many new performance options. For example, you disply three coins on you left hand but the center one is NV -- a space. As you pick up this NV Coin the other two coins slide together -- then the right fingers rub together to produce heat and the Coin becomes Visible. The T.U.C. is ideally suited for such effects and an entire routine using NV coins is included in T.U.C. Appreciation.
