Hello Everyone,
I heard that New-York has very good magic teachers. Would you have suggestions? Many thanks! Best Dom |

I know that NYC has some very fine magic shops. You might try going into one of them and asking them to refer you.

Your best bet is to hang around Fantasma or Tannens and get introducde or refered. At Fantasma you have David Roth who works there and Simon Lovell hangs out there. David has told me Harry Loryane stops there too, they may know some fine people who are taking students or themselves taking students. You could talk to their main guy Magick for info. Tannens the same is the same thing. Infact go to Tannens and talk to Rich Kameda. He does and Intro into Card Magic class on Wed starting in Feb. Hes a really good card worker. He might take some personal students. If your into coin magic talk to Mike. I see your in Canada. When are you planning to come to NYC? |

Welcome to your first magic lesson...
This is called "legwork". Its is an absolute necessity to get comfortable with if you want to be any sort of performer.

Thanks for the info guys.
I live in Canada but I'm in Barbados right now and will be for a while. I cannot locate where I found that info anymore but I read somewhere that NYC had very good magic teachers. Therefore, I was willing to fly there for a week or so in order to get some coaching. I was thinking about something similar to Jeff McBride's Magic and Mystery School in Vegas where you can have a 3 or 7-day in-school class with them. Best Dom |

NYC doesn't have a monopoly on good magic instruction. I'm not aware of instructors in Barbados, would recommend Tyler Erickson, based in Minnieapolis-Saint Paul, who gives lessons in person as well as over Skype. You may also check to see if there is an IBM Ring near you in either Barbados or Canada
Good luck, Hudson |

Hi Dom!
If you are in NYC, I would try and run into Marion Boykin (Mb217). As far as coins go, he is my recommendation. He posts often in the "Nothing Up My Sleeve" section here in the Café. Welcome to the Magic Café, by the way, Dom! Doug |

What kind of magic are you interested in learning or improving? How much skill or experience do you currently have? Are you looking for help with an act or coaching on specific slights or effects? Who are your biggest influences/favorite performers?

Hi Daniel,
Stage Magic and Close-up/Street Magic is what I am working on. I started in the magic world when I was 7 year old, then did some shows in the early 90's and left everything a couple of years later for a ''real'' carreer as my parents said! In my mid 30's now, everything has to be learned from scratched (saw my thread on the Elmsey Count...gosh I was struggling like mad, but it came back quickly!). I took a 3 year leave from my employer to focus on magic (again) as it is what I like to do. Coaching would be the approach I presume. The biggest influences? David Copperfield and Cirque du Soleil. Thank you Daniel for your questions, it forces me to do some mental gymnastics! Best Dom |

If you asked this question in regards to any other "art" in New York, people in that field could give you a list of hundreds of the best "teachers" in New York City (and that wouldn't include the teachers that are just fine). This is really a sad state of our art. Good luck with your pursuit, domf.

Steve Brooks sent this out in a private message in a while back. Not cheap, but you can be trained by some of the best in the world.

Harry Lorayne is a regular contributor here, and I believe, a denizen of NYC. You may try to ask him.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
