I hope this is what we ARE striving for in our performances.
We all know enough tricks, let's being entertaining to bring about these type of reactions! Mark

Yes, THANK YOU! People don't care as much about the trick as much as they care about who you are (whoever that may be). Denny Haney says it best: "If they like you, they'll like anything you do"

We ALL must be better performers in 2011
We must elevate ourselves, our audiences and most of all we must elevate the ART of Magic To place it, to give it, to return it to the stature it deserves For if not us, them whom? Performance Magic deserves a sincerely better reputation than is currently is given It is up to us, each and every performing artist to enable that Not the hobbyist, not the 1 or 2 a month weekend show performer Not the occasional magic club members But us, the real performers in the trenches (so to speak) to elevate the Art

Who does this for me? The list would be very long but for starters (I used video available currently on You Tube as a criteria) Tommy Wonder Ricky Jay John Carney Rocco Ammar Denny Haney Joanie Spina (as a director she is amazing) Dai Vernon Tina Lenert Simon Drake Stuart & Barry Penn & Teller Some of the most important books on the art are the hardest to find Neo-Magic Artistry ~ should be a must read for every serious performer! (after Tarbell, Books of Wonder, Fitzkie Trilogy, Magic and Showmanship, Strong Magic and Our Magic) I'm certain those of you reading this can think of many other great performers and books but again back to the first post Make me care about your work Not just a trick Show me something, an effect Something that makes me think, Something that makes me feel, Make me laugh, make me cry, make me angry or teach me something I DON'T CARE AS LONG AS YOU MAKE ME FEEL SOMETHING! Make me care about what you're doing, make me care about you or at least make me feel something, enlighten me, take me for a ride or a journey, even between the ears Please don't just say look at this and do a trick Give me emotional involvement, make me want to be invested in what your showing me Make it magic AND MAKE IT AMAZING! Share something special with the world Make the world a better place through your art ~ just standing there in bad clothes with the look at me and what I can do type performance isn't going to do that ~ if that is all you can do right now, please limit it to your magic club meetings or for your friends and family until you are ready, until you have the time and practice Or if that is what you want to do, be a hobbyist, that is great. Just keep it in the appropriate places MAGIC IS ART ~ ART IS MAGIC

It is very frustrating to tun into people who get a trick, perhaps practice it once or twice then call themselves a magician and perform publicly! Unfortunately it happens much more than you would think and it is really hard to make people like that understand that magic is much more than a trick! Magic is a work of art that requires much thought and work before it becomes a masterpiece.

There are some hobbyists and 1 or 2 a month weekend performers out there who could give a lot of "real performers" a quite serious run for their money. Why divide? I'd encourage all involved to become more aware of the Art of Magic. Laurie |

In response to the opening post I say you first. We all have different ideas of what is good, I like short and to the point I also like magic to be mixed in with conversation so someone who likes theatrical performances would probably not care for my brand of magic and vise versa.

One of the pieces I do is about 45 seconds but it gets thoughts going and is a interesting departure from the norm and can be appreciated on different levels Conversation is a a good thing, it allows us to really reach out to our audience and relate to them, it gets away from the look at me and what I can do and makes us human ...... and likable. Likable is SO IMPORTANT to performing great magic Different ideas of good ....NO, we may have different ideas of what we enjoy but if a piece is good it's good regardless if we enjoy it or not and likewise if it's bad, it's bad Their are some workers and professionals I don't enjoy watching but they are still good. magicalaurie _ Yes, yes I am a bit of an elitist. It is very hard to become very good at an art form without a significant amount of effort, to the point of sacrifice (it's not sacrifice when you love it, it's part of your life and identity). It's really hard to put forth that effort if you are a 1 or 2 shows a month or hobbyist kind of guy. Nothing wrong with being a hobbyist or a 1 or 2 shows a month guy but it's near impossible to put in the study and flight time to reach excellence. Look at painters or photographers as an example, the person who paints as a hobby isn't going to be at the level of someone who does it full time and went to college for art Forget my rambling and get back to the point in 2011 .... give your best, and then some Make your work art and nothing less, don't settle. Make your audience think and feel, give them a special expereince, not just a couple of look at me tricks Magic is such a rich art form, to do anything less is criminal Give our art the respect it deserves in your work

Vick,
I've been a magic hobbyist my entire life. I assure you my level of dedication and love of magic is at least equal many who perform for the public more often. I'd bet a dollar I practice and rehearse more than most making their living from magic. One trick I worked out has thousands of hours, (yes thousands darn it), of experimentation and practice behind it. Working in different magic shops as a kid let me get over the fear of performing for people. 20 years on submarines gave me a place to practice and a captive audience. Every sailor I served with that I've run across since I got out remembers the magic. I've found a like-minded cadre of friends, here in the Bay Area of Northern California. We gather intermittently in small groups to discuss and perform what we're working on. Our little crew has expanded into running an annual convention. None of us make our living from magic. We're a banker, a programmer an insurance agent and a grumpy old ex-sailor. Any of the four of us can and do put on presentations for the public. I've seen many magicians at paid venues that were absolutely horrible. Hackneyed, overly dramatic performances coupled with inane story-based patter seems to be the norm for this crew. They rarely have any technical abilities. You can tell they never practice or rehearse. Don't divide good and bad along the lines of who gets paid at the end of the night. I never assume my magic is finished or good enough. I'll still watch a ten-year-old who's enthusiastic about the art because he's still learning. He doesn't assume he's better than the rest of the crowd. KG Vick, I do NOT put you into the group of bad performers I spoke of. I just wanted to speak up for the hobbyists. ps. Don't think I don't like story tricks - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45msXohAREY |
