Working the streets after so many years Breaking so many 'magic wands' or sticks it can feel (sometimes)"here we go again".
The reality sets in somewhat on relying on the street to provide for me and my family. Trepadatious at times but ultimately fulfilling. Making one's bed and having to lay in it is quite sobering at times. Things DO change though The streets have taught me so much and I've been fortunate to meet and count as friends some really great people. Yes I've been guilty of being generic, yes I've been guilty of plagiarism, to which there is no excuse. And YES I have seen much of what the street can throw at you and learned from it. The streets, apart from the show and business side of it, have given me an insight on crowd dynamics, group responses, and audience management. All great tools which ogre well when a paid standup gig I'd booked. There is no other training or learning curve better. Work the streets and you WILL get better as a performer, providing you listen along the way. Jimmy Talksalot, Nick Nickolas, Charlie Caper, Gazzo, and others (non magicians) have all posted here, I for one have listened and taken on board, as well as laughed, and enjoyed what I've read. My raisin d'terre for posting is that I'm standing here on pitch in the mild sun waiting to bang the stick and these thoughts came to me. Thanks for reading James James http://www.magicnewstelevision.com |

Nice Post James,.. but you forgot just one of `the seven deadly sins´. Envy.
I´m deeply, no, HEAVILY snowed-in, in the Black Forest. No village in front of me. No pub behind of me. Middle of nowhere, Black Forest, white version, since two weeks. (I saw the snow coming, but I thought I´d squeeze in "just one more little Christmas market", "bamm" the curtain dropped.) So, I´m sitting here, Envious, that I´m not in a "mild sun, waiting to bang my raisins". How many "Hail Mary´s" and "Our Father´s" is this going to cost me?!? Thanks James, keeping cool, but still givin´it easy, gallagher. |

I can't imagine what it's like to be snowed in. Argh... I feel for my colleagues back in the UK, especially over the Christmas period, hear on FB that gigs were cancelled and the roads were treacherous. I've not to whinge about really, as living in Oz is the best it has been for moi. Although it does get hot, hot, hot. Anyway, did 4 shows yesterday and would love to say that I came out richer than rich, but no. Still made more than I would have had, had I not worked. I've got to remember that. When the day's take is low, it's still a take and there is always tomorrow. Money made, is what you wouldn't have had, had you not worked. I'm thankful.
Hope you're wrapped up well and the snow will thaw. Upward and onward. James James |

Nice one Bob, it's easy sometimes to be subjective, rather than otherwise. It is possible to overlook what we do as just a job, when in reality, when it's good... It's good

Jimmy Talksalot got it right when he wrote "It's better to go out and do something than to stay at home and plan something."
There's no way that I could get as much practice and improvement in real conditions than being out on the street.
The presentation makes the magic.

Jimmy has it SPOT on. You can plan, plan, and plan some more... but until you hit the streets with it its shape doesn't form. The streets are a hard task master but there is so much benefit to be gleaned from 'the doing'. My mentor told me Genius is 95% taking action. Just about to fly home after 5 days at Port Lincolns' Tunarama festival and I'm mire knackered than doing 6 a day at Edinburgh Fringeust be getting old.
