Just wondering how many of you watched the airing of the show "My Strange Addiction" which featured the woman from NYC who is "addicted to ventriloquism". My question is, has she done enough damage to the world of ventriloquism to counter the positive things that Jeff Dunham and Terry Fator and many more have done to raise the status of ventriloquism? I have often joked about how Lily has her own little rack of clothes etc, but now I fear that people may put me in the same category as this woman! Maybe not enough people saw the show to cause a concern, but I am just curious as to how some of you feel about what she portrayed on the show. She definitely did not give ventriloquism a good name!

April Brucker is well known around NYC comedy circles. "Well known" is not the same as "well respected." In my opinion, she is simply a publicity seeker. I don't for a minute believe she's "addicted to ventriloquism." And as for people who degrade ventriloquism to promote themselves, my words are not suitable for a family board.

Lisa and Bob,
This has always been the case with vent...the press is always looking for someone weird to feature, and there seems to be plenty of weird, publicity seeking vents who will do anything to get themselves in front of a camera. I had my fill of it running the Vent ConVENTion. We allowed a well known newspaper to come to the ConVENTion one year, treated them well, showed them how important the art is to many... and then they did a hatchet job on us and vent in general. I now tell all media upfront that vent is to be portrayed in a positive way, not making us look weird, or don't come! Period! You'd be surprised how many backed away when I told them our ConVENTion and vent in general will not be a target for them anymore. This woman is one of the many who play into their hands...and who gives us all a bad name. Mark markwade@kidshowvent.com |

Between what Bob wrote, and what I read in the link he posted, it's another person coming up with a bunch of B.S. to get their 15 minutes.

Sorry we didn't fill in the blanks for those who don't know what we are talking about. It seems a comedian / ventriloquist in the NYC area claims to have an addiction to vent. She can't go anywhere without her puppets and she talks to them and acts like they are real live people. She got some airtime on television and it makes us all look kinda stupid. Come to find out she is a struggling comic (and not a very good one at that, I'm told..) and she put this act on to get exposure and to get her "15 minutes of fame", at our expense. The media sets us up to get this type of reaction, and they found a willing accomplice in this woman. We've been dealing with this kind of stuff for years at Vent Haven. It's really sad...

It seems that this type of situation gives all of us the incentive to conduct ourselves (both performers and makers) in a way that assumes that we are always on camera so that nothing in our individual or collective behavior can be used to put the art in a negative light. I know that my experience at Vent Haven has always been positive because of the EXTREME professionalism of Mark and others on staff of the ConVENTion. That show is a well oiled machine.

My girlfriend was just watching TLC and this episode was on, she told me it was on, but I didn't watch it knowing from this thread it was baloney. I'm surprised they are still airing it, apparently they are the last to know they were being played.
