I know awhile back James Prince was compiling a list of close-up performers with the times and restaurants they performed. It was dropped for some reason.
Is there still such a list somewhere? If so, where? If not, would there be interest in making our own? I know whenever I go out of town (rarely) I would like to visit/support a fellow worker. Thanks for reading and responding.

Does Magic magazine still include such a list? I know that it used to.

Nor I.
Next time you're in a magic shop, browse a copy. They used to have a list near the back. |

Maybe we could start a list here,it would be nice to see where everyone performs.

And it would be more current because we could see the date posted.

Any suggestions on how to work it? Just post and look thru the entire thread? Someone keep a tally and post here every so often? I might be able to keep a tally using a spread sheet and post it here monthly or so.
Not sure. Just a thought.

Alec,
Whereas I think this would be a great idea, I feel that a project like this would be highly impractacle and near impossible to keep up to date. Sadly, I feel that the majority of restaurant performers do not (or cannot) keep a gig for any extended period of time. I think that the average restaurant entertainer keeps a gig for a year or less and then is forced to move on for one reason or another. Someone could land a gig some place and have their name put on the list, and then a few months later, lose the gig and forget to update the list letting viewers know they're no longer there. When I travel, I ALWAYS go and support at least one local restaurant entertainer. I go to Google, type in the City I'm going to and type in Magicians. I have yet to not get at least 1 hit. I contact that magician and ask if they're working any restaurants in their city and if not, if they know of any other magi who perform publically in a restaurant or club. So far, that process seems to work very well... Just my 2 cents... Christopher

...and NO. Magic Mag no longer provides a list of entertainers like they use to.

….and I believe Magic Mag no longer does this is because of the reason you stated. Performers are quick to add their name and very slow (if ever) to withdraw.
Sorry to say, I think it is this idea is impractical also.

The link above for restaurantmagicians.com has had a banner at the front page of "Table Hoppers" forum for about a year and a half. The list was created by friend and consumate pro DJ Ehlert. He's a long-term restaurant magician and owner of Kenosha Magic, a brick and mortar shop in Wisconsin. DJ did the list as a service for his colleagues because he felt the same way as Slyhand about the lack of any such list. The button for adding yourself is at the top in big blue letters.
Though the list wasn't intended to be commercial, DJ does have his fingers in a lot of pots, and did write a rather complete manual on securing and keeping restaurant gigs, so he offers them for sale to anyone that has an interest. Congrats are in order indeed! I thought I may have the record with 7. I worked every Friday night at an up-scale steakhouse in town for 7 years and it closed last Halloween. I haven't been actively searching due to health reasons, but I imagine once I'm over this hump, I'll be back in the game.
That's interesting to hear about a shop in Kenosha. I live in PA, but my brother lives in Kenosha and will check it out in the spring when I visit. |
