Hey guys, as my last hurrah for college this spring break I will be going with a large group to Vegas. This inspired me to pick up my passion for magic that I have set aside for a long time. Brushing up on old material, incorporating new material was fun and I feel I have very solid impromptu routines and closers. HOWEVER, I really don't have an opener.
How do you guys in the magic community get people to ask YOU to do magic instead of going up to THEM to see if they'd "like to see a magic trick"? A fire trick I feel would be close to this realm but I can't palm cards (because my hands are too thin) so things like KAPS on fire are a little hard to justify if you don't have a card to expose. What are your favorite openers in casual setting (bar, street, lounge)? For my second question and guess more controversial one, On a college budget I've had to be frugal. However I recently discovered one drunk night that magic can help generate social capital which in turn can qualify you for free service. Have you ever gotten free drinks or free tickets because of your magic? Without abusing the art, how have you guys framed magic in context to get free items like food or tickets? I felt like these 2 seemingly different questions belonged on the same thread because I feel they needed to work together. My only thought right now is doing a fire effect (that I still don't have) to gain publicity, and then when they ask ME to see another trick, then I'll be able to ask them if they could help me out with a free drink on the house or whatever. I asked this question on other forums but I have really high hopes for the answers from this one as most members seem to have been in the field for quite a while. Thank you for your time. |

There is nothing wrong with Bartering for service. Exchanging value is the key. Example, If there is a local restaurant(s) near campus, and they aren't willing to pony up (or pony up enough)offer them an hour or two of strolling for $100 or a combination of cash and product of equal value. I've done shows for businesses where, while their "budget is low" they were willing to kick in the equivalent of their product, (video games, carriage rides, gift certificates, food etc...) to make it worth my while. My general rule of thumb is that if I expect $100 cash and but was to accept product in exchange, I wanted $150 worth (or some combination thereof). At the end of the day, just determine your worth and exchange your service for something of value as you see fit.

I open my card set with a very simple deck production using flash paper. This is very similar to how David stone does it but I have a really cheap tool that helps.
So deck appears from fire, I then vanish the box, which leaves a deck to do my set with. 2 hard hitting effects in 20 seconds. Plus all you need is flash paper so it's as cheap as chips. |
