RespectCopyrights.org is a new organization dedicated to educating folks about how pirated, bootlegged and unauthorized downloads of motion pictures can seriously effect the financial welfare of thousands.
They have started a nation wide television campaign and now have their own website: Click here for more information With piracy being a very serious issue in the magic industry as well, I felt many of you may be interested in the work of this organization in its quest to help reduce the spread of such illegal activity which is clearly theft, no matter how you care to slice it. Perhaps Magic should partake of such a worthwhile undertaking?

One of the major broadsheets in the UK recently did a study that pretty much proved that internet 'piracy' actually did nothing to decrease 'real' sales and in some cases even had a positive effect.
Obviously this was applied to music rather than magic.

I would have to agree about there being a sort of 'legitimized' piracy of intellectual property in magic. We've read so many requests for details of niche market items seen on TV specials and posts about how methods have been reconstructed, and effects duplicated.
For mass market consumables though, it would seem that the 'collectors' want the highest quality product and that includes the full packaging and what seems like market participation sentiments. The movie and music fans I know have the legit produts on their shelves. The folks who really like movies/music alot want to own a legit copy. They may be avid fans and so seek out the pre-release and 'live' material AS WELL. The movie thing is also about the same issue. Those who go out to the movies will see things in the theater. Those who might not, will look at a 'home view' version and have a chance to make an informed decision to go and see the movie on the big screen. The 'issue' being ignored pertains to well advertised though unsatisfactory products. Why buy the milk if you know it is sour? From a marketing/advertising perspective: the purchase reflects a timly association of positive sentiment as projected by the product placement. Since by deffinition the products themselves are indistinguishable, it can ONLY be the sales effort that makes the difference. The negative sales/marketing campaign that comes from poor product evaluation is inconsistant with the assumption that all products are identical. Hence we have the conflict between those who insist that product distribution and sales are affected by uncontrolled product review and evaluation... and the folks who want to look at the product itself. Funny how the marketing model does not account for 'cult' classics and how the 'bootleg' home versions of products seem to get replaced by legit copies almost as soon as made available at free market prices.

I'll admit that I have downloaded music on the internet before. I don't consider this "stealing," though. I consider it "previewing." I would hate to spend $15 on something that I don't even like! I've discovered some of my favorite bands on the internet! These downloaded songs have led to my paying for the group's CDs!

I think it is like the speed limit. We know we shouldn't break it, but we do.

Andini makes an interesting point, in music especially, you can hear a song a hundred times without ever buying it. This can be done legally just by listening to the radio. And this is previewing, if you like it enough you will go and buy it.
There is no such service in magic. In fact, the opposite applies, we can't even buy an effect, realise we're never going to use it and send it back for a refund. A few internet sites now allow a video preview before you buy which is a step in the right direction.
