Hi Lonnie,
Even for somebody that doesn't like anything on the DVD, how could you not use any of the material? Twist & Shake and Perfecto are KILLER routines. Twist & Shake is very visual, and plays very big. Perfecto is straightforward mentalism with no fishy moves or excess byplay. These are unquestionably my two favorite effects from the DVD. I know I'm not going to please everyone as they have differing views, and for every person that has told me they didn't like the DVD, I've heard from hundreds that have. I'm just wondering how you wouldn't like, or use, magic that is so direct and visual? -Oz |

Oz,
I never said I didn't like the material on the dvd. I just said there was nothing on the dvd that I would use. I love visual magic. I use tons of it all the time. Why would I ad another twisting effect to my list of things that I already do? There was nothing on the dvd that made me say "I have to learn that!" |

I enjoyed the DVD very much.
Like others have said, most of the effects are impromptu. The only thing I disliked about it that I really like about other DVDs was the performance. With an exception of the attractive girls , I didn't really like the performance since I don't think the patter was very good. In other DVDs, such as Bill Malone's "On the Loose", the patter is GREAT and I could watch his performance over and over. Other than that, I thought the DVD was very good. Congrads on a great DVD Oz! Regards, Evan |

Just a quick point, Bill Malone relies almost solely on presentation. If you notice most of the effects on his DVDs are super simple, but they are great because of presentation.
Jakks P.S. I am not saying that Bill Malone is not skilled, just making a point about some effects. |

Good point Jakks. I guess I personally like tricks like that. Easy to follow, simple to perform, and GREAT presentation to keep the audience happy.
It's what I look for in a good effect, and I guess that's why I like Malone's stuff so much. I also realize that Malone uses other peoples tricks and handling except for "Sam the Bellhop". That's why I give Oz a ton of credit for making up a bunch of powerful tricks of his own. Regards, Evan |

Well stated Lonnie.
I had a discussion with a young magician about this DVD a few weeks ago and he got ver upset with me (he even cursed at me) because I didn't "love" the DVD. I told him basically what Lonnie said. The material would appeal to newer(or even some veteran) card magicians who haven't really been exposed to a lot of card magic. I didn't bash the DVD at all but the fact that I wouldn't praise any of the material was enough to anger him. It's a solid DVD but I would never use anything on it.

Evan,
Oz's tricks are variations of previous tricks as well. These are not new. I don't have the DVD but what I have seen from the previews Twist & Shout is a variation of Waving the Aces. Besides that I don't have an opinion on the content as quality of material since I have not seen the DVD but the previews are all variations of some sort. Dave |

Rating something a "2 out of 10" indicates that there is something substandard about the material--not the relative usefulness to the novice.
It would seem that praising the material to a beginner audience on one hand, and then rendering it with a rating that may discourage any sales whatsoever is just plain irresponsible posting. Everybody's a Yoda, until they themselves have to wield the saber. . . |

I don't think there is anything irresponsible about Lonnie's post. Someone asked a question about the material, he gave it a rating and later on he stated why he gave it that rating. He didn't say the material was horrible he just said that nothing caught his eye. It's funny why certain people are so protective of others on this forum. Aren't we allowed to give an honest opinion of material even if it isn't favorable or are we leaning towards censorship of all non positive critiques?

I also found it more oriented towards the beginners.
and Oz, nothing was a "mentalism routine" on the DVD it was card effects - some nicer than others. I don't say mentalism can't use cards - it can. but the routines the way you presented them were not mentalism, or mental magic. nothing bad about it though... on the other hand, what I like is that independant performers go out and make their own DVDs with their own routines (which may be variations on old routines - why not???) so basically even though I didn't enjoy the DVD as much as others might, I give thumbs up for it! the magic is good for those who like card magic, and there is nothing wrong with variations... n |

Nir,
Well, the DVD is titled "Stealing Pips", pushing towards the idea of cards. Jakks |

Hey Ron,
I take it you didn't learn your lesson from watching yoda. Don't you remember what he did when he pulled out the light saber? He unleashed one major can of whip ***!! Wow, I can't imagine what happens when certain magazine reviewers give honest opinions on certain videos. Or is it that I'm just an ordinary guy giving my point of view that has you guys upset? Would it help if I put my views on the pages of a brand name magazine? Would I be respected then? It makes no difference to me. I remember the review of the ellusionist video series. That was the best freaking review ever!!! They got everything they deserved....everything. Did that hurt sales for Brad Christian? Heck no!! I don't believe that I did anything that was irresponsible. |

It is my belief that if you distribute something for profit then a harsh review is not inappropriate. Oz has every intention of defending his DVD which he should. Alternatively, Lonnie has every right to give his impression without being bashed for his honest views.
I have held off considering buying Stealing Pips until I can see a review from either a magic magazine or the more knowledgeable magic folks on this board. I have a hard time hearing the best DVD of the year when advertising but am not hearing the same song from the people in the know. I can base my decision to purchase from the trailer which looked nice but nothing I don't already have or reading a good review from respected sources. Dave |

Hey Ron,
I notice you took your reply down. What happened? |

Ron Giesecke Special user Redding, Ca. 947 Posts |
Lonnie,
I took it down because I realized that, while I made my point (to anyone who would care), it was pointless overall. I have some degree of restraint, and know when a good point is wasted(to which I contend here). Besides, I have an incendiary writing style that could only cause things to deteriorate further, as sarcasm does not always translate to everyone (and I don't mean you, specifically), and my now-deleted post fit the bill as somewhat inappropriate, in my own sage opinion. I'm Sorry if it sounded personal. Maybe we can meet on more cordial terms elsewhere in the Café. A guy with over 500 posts can't be all that bad This thread is at its lot. Have a good day, Ron |
