This is a review for the content of the DVD „The Revolution featuring Helter Skelter“ by Aaron Fisher. The DVD is available for 29,95 $ plus 5,00 $ shipping and handling from http://www.aaronfishermagic.com/store.htm. Apart from the DVD one can purchase an instant access version for 24,95 $. This online version offers the same content as the DVD, but it provides a worldwide access without carrying a silver disc.
I should mention that Aaron asked me to write a review of „The Revolution“ for the German market. But I had to promise a fair and honest review. As one will see in a moment, I take this promise seriously…. Now, what is „The Revolution featuring Helter Skelter“? Basically, it is a “Color-Change-technique”, that means a playing card changes into another. Based on the technique of “The Revolution” one will find on the DVD (because of simplicity I will only discuss the “DVD”, even if I mean the online access) the effect “Helter Skelter”, which is a color chainging deck routine, and the effect “Revolution #9”, in which first a playing card turns visually upside down – and then the deck follows. This effect is similar to an effect described in the book “Paper Engine” by Aaron Fisher, but without the execution of the pass/ (“volte” in German). My first thought was: 30 Dollars for just one technique??? Way too much – no technique is worth 30 Dollars. Shamefaced I had to admit after watching the 50-minute-video that I should judge so hastily. For 30 Dollars on receives something that is truly missed in this times of “20-minutes-one-trick-DVDs” and “5-minute-explanations”: an instructional video in the true sense of the expression. Admitted, it was not necessary that Aaron sits in his living room on a couch and provides the explanations. But in my opion it´s the content that counts. And the content is explosive! Aaron delivers a teaching play regarding explanation and teaching. On the one hand the technique of “The Revolution” is explained in all its particulars. Point-of-view-shots from the from and from behind leave nothing desired regarding visual explications. The repitions are just enough to follow the explanation with cards in hands. Beyond that the speed of the explanations are slow enough for the beginner to not be frustrated. And for the more advanced card handler the speed of the explanation is fast enough so that one is not be bored. Furthermore, it is simply fun to watch Aaron talk. One feels quickly, that Aaron has a lot of fun in teaching his invented technique and to provide a good learning experience for his students. In the course of this Aaron is not only willing, he succeeds in providing this experience. The technique taught on the DVD is indeed good. I cannot say whether the technique is truly revolutionary – this is beyond my competence. But in any case the moves are perfectly motivated – and not moving the hand while the spectator burns it…. this is pure fun! Aaron teaches all the details, the setup (very easy), the get in and the get out, and the clean up at the end. The same applies for the effects taught. First the effects are introduced based on “real world performances”, then they are explained in details – again with all the subtleties, the get readys, the handlings and the clean ups. No questions are unanswered. But even if an inventor of such a technique thinks he had explained everything – there might still exist some questions that are not covered in the explanations provided. Aaron has thought about this. The DVD contains as a bonus a recording from the youth camp “Sorcerers Safari Card Class”, in which Aaron introduced “The Revolution” to the participants and where the youths can discuss their problems with Aaron. The questions asked are the real deal and not delivered just for the sake of the recording. And that leaves only one question: Does one need this DVD? I don´t think I can provide a definite answer to this question. I suggest that one should think about all the bad “one trick”-DVDs with very short and insufficient explanations that are available and that one has already purchased. In contrast, Aaron provides real value for money. Oh, the heck with it: I would recommend purchasing the online access version. People who want to learn the technique properly will not be disappointed, especially when one takes into account the various applications for “The Revolution”. And Aaron is an excellent and fun teacher. Aaron – well done. 8.5 of 10 points! Carsten
