Jules Feiffer did a play of his comic strips once. One thing that stuck in my mind was a guy complaing about losing socks in the washer.
As I recall, the bit went: I go to the laundry, along with the laundry I wash six pairs of socks. When the laundry is done I find four pairs of socks plus one green sock and one yellow sock. I go to the laundry, along with the laundry I wash four pairs of socks. When the laundry is done, I find two pairs of socks plus one red sock and one argyle sock. I go to the laundry, along with the laundry I wash two pairs of socks. When the laundry is done, I find one pair of socks, the other pair never show up. I go to the laundry. As a test I was nothing but the one pair of socks. When the laundry is done, I pull out a body stocking. In the body stocking is a note; "Don't toy with the laws of nature, and feed the machine more socks!" I have problems figuring out a switch mechanism. I thought for the rountine, the socks should all be black going it. What'cha think?

dude, you've hit upon a really good presentation for the old 'dye box' trick.
Take your wonderful finding and have a look in classics like Tarbell. Bravo!

I thought of that... but loading all the socks in the secret compartment and hiding the black pairs of socks... I don't think the dye box would be big enough. But I'll think about it.
(I don't have Tarbell's... I keep meaning to buy a copy, but I'm [real] poor!)

Wasn't thinking about the exact method per se, just the premise.
The old silk routines with a cardboard box. The books from back then are full of routines using hankerchiefs. You'd be using socks (which do come in silk BTW) so it seemed a natural. A quick look in the old magic catalogs or Dunninger's should get you going.

Don't bother switching the socks; make them reversible instead. Take two contrasting socks (black and yellow, in this case), turn the tops down (inside out)and sew the inside of the socks together at the heels. Turn the black sock top back up to top of the other sock and sew the tops together. Viola - One color changing sock! Now sew a matching black sock to the top cuff of the black sock. Viola again - now it's a disappearing pair of socks, appearing yellow sock! For the disappearing pair in the 3rd phase, make the inside sock the same as the outside. For the body stocking, sew one end into the heel of a sock and attache your sign to the body stocking. Use a plain medium sized cardboard box that you open up on stage. Draw a washing machine door on it. Patter, patter, put in the 1st socks. Don't turn the socks inside out until you are taking them out. Set aside the color changed socks at each phase. In the end, you take apart the box again and show its totally empty. Maybe even give out the box to someone after you've torn it open and say "Here, you keep it, I'm going to start going to the dry cleaners!"
Just my thoughts on it. You may have to use very thin black socks and thicker contrasting ones to cover the bulkiness. |
