Hello all,
I just received the Trilby Connection DVD's as a gift and have not had time yet to watch, (probably tomorrow). This my first experience with Hypnosis. I primarily do close up and some mentalism and have been doing so as a hobby for over 20yrs. My question is, Can I learn to do this by watching the DVD's, my gut tells me probably not as I'm sure there is quite a learning curve and another question that comes to mind.... can family and friends by hypnotized or is this normally done with strangers? Thanks to all who reply. Randy |

I've just had some bacon and eggs with hand-picked mushrooms and beans, followed by our very own home made marmalade and toast which was delicious! I just wanted to say that.
Hello RandyM. That's not a name used a lot here in the UK, where 'randy' is a synonym for 'horny' (that's what I love about The Café. Highly educational). I think the answer is huge, but as Anthony (Trilby's author) illustrated: it doesn't need to be. Many have read a small paperback on hypnosis and gone out and done a stage show that weekend (fact). That was many years ago before the experts came along and convinced us that it couldn't be done! A lot of it will be about who YOU are rather than what hypnosis is. However the succinct answer is: 'Yes, you can learn this by watching DVD's'. I can assure you however that there are people who have every DVD out there and been on several courses and have never hypnotised anyone. That's all about that longer answer I mentioned earlier! I do hope some of this makes sense. But with 20 years experience performing I think you'll fall nicely into the former category. However, if you were my friend I'd either giver you hands on tuition or advise you to go get some (along with those excellent DVD's of Anthony's). All the very best RandyM. Bob

Like anything in life (and I think we should all agree on this), the less exposure you have to information, the steeper the learning curve.
"Can" it be done? Of course the answer is yes. I know a quite successful hypnotist who did exactly as Bobser has said. The man never had an accident on stage, and has quite a prosperous career. Bobser also points out (and he is right even though it is painful to say) that there are guys who are the EXACT opposite. Have every scrap of info and yet have never tried hypnosis. Heck right here on the Café' I would say that is the majority of folks. It is funny Bobser how you seem to think the problem is the experts who tell us these things can't be done, like reading a paperback and then doing a show are a problem. I think the experts who convince us that it can be done so quickly that ARE the problem. BUT that aside I think that the more information you have, in general the better success and understanding you will have. There is a happy medium though. Bobser points out (Grrr and rightly so!) the two extremes. The important thing is to define what you would like to be and go from there. If you are interested in stage work, don't get a lot of the instant inductions and street DVD's. If you want to do more demos for your friends, don't buy DVD's on long stage inductions and routines.

Well Randy, (Which I now I can't type without thinking of Austin Powers .. thanks bobser. Next you're going to tell me fanny doesn't mean backside.) I am on the same journey as you now. I too have done magic for over 20 years so we should enjoy the benefits and hindrances of that as we learn. I started a thread last week detailing my educational path. As you already know, it is a pretty cool place here to be able to interact with professionals in the field and hopefully avoid some of the pitfalls in our education. Good luck!!

Hey guys, Thanks so much for the quick response. I just watched the first DVD and am quite impressed. The instruction suggests getting out there and practice. Would friends be appropriate to practice the technique or is it best left to strangers. Many friends and family enjoy the magic and mentalism I do and in fact enjoy seeing it when they come to visit so they are not skeptical or looking for the secret. I suppose if they are generally interested that they would be good to practice on??

It is entirely appropriate to practice with those around you. Be a force for good and get them fascinated.

Randy, of course you can learn the techniques of hypnosis by DVD or from online video courses like mine. Hypnosis technique is no problem, which is often the problem ;-) The learning curve is only great if you don't get it from an expert, that is someone who has the experience as well as the technique and who will tell you what works rather than what doesn't. And of course who will tell you what to do when it goes wrong, which it will the more you do it. In fact make sure that safety and repairing mistakes is absolutely something you learn so you never see it go wrong yourself. This isn't mentalism tricks after all and if you've ever seen anyone spontaneously freak out then you'll know what I mean. And we won't go anywhere near false memory syndrome will we?
As for using it to make a living entertaining with it, well that comes down to whether you are an entertainer using hypnosis as way of entertaining, or a hypnotherapist trying to make it entertaining. It's an advantage to be an entertainer first in my opinion, and the end result is usually more satisfyingly showbiz. Go for it ,mate, you'll really enjoy the beautiful art. |

This is truly an amazing art. With that said I'm not too sure I have the time or confidence to actually excel. I think I will stick with entertaining friends, family, etc. I stopped doing shows several years ago as my Full Time Profession just doesn't allow me the time. The DVD's are exceptional and there is no doubt that someone with the time and desire will succeed in learning how to accomplish an induction. I'm gonna offer these here on the Café' to any member who can put these to good use.
