I'm doing a show in a few weeks, and I need to include a trick with a noose. It can be a quick trick. The audience size will be about 400, adults and children. Anyone have any ideas?

If you know how to tie a noose you can catch a card in a cowboy hat.
If it doesn't have to be a hangman's noose you can catch your own arm in a noose during a longer rope routine. Since it is for kids I'd avoid actually putting a noose around a neck. Why do you need to do a noose trick? -Mary Mowder |

My "Ghost Rope" from The Wizards' Journal #1 is done with a noose. The patter used with it makes use of "Nearly Headless Nick" from the Harry Potter books, which most kids should recognize by now. No one is asked to put his head in the noose.

The trick that Mary is talking about is called the loso rope trick. You pull a forced card from a cowboy hat which is tied to a laso. Are you sure you want to do rope magic for 400 people?

Mary, the show is for Purim at a synagogue. They're reading the Scroll of Esther, and I'm doing magic to illustrate throughout the story. In one of the scenes a bunch of bad guys are hanged, so I thought I'd do something with a hangman's noose. Catching a card in a hat wouldn't fit that theme. I don't mind putting a noose around someone's neck (Purim can be a bit Bacchanalian) if there is some such effect, but I would choose an adult for that.
Spellbinder, your Ghost Rope sounds very interesting. Al, if you can think of something other than ropes to represent a hanging, I'd be happy to consider it! But I think a noose should be visible for 400 people: it's a kind of small amphitheatre, so nobody is that far from the stage. Todd

The very first effect in Chapter Nine, Penetrations - Two Ropes, of Stewart James' "Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks" is very noose-like in appearance and might be useful for your situation.

It is very easy to gaff a noose with the separation inside of the knot coils and the free rope still slides.

I think I'm just going to go with a rope thru neck effect. Even though it's not exactly a noose, it's close enough thematically.
Thanks to all for all the suggestions.

As I remember, the wonderful "Paul Potassy" book has a GREAT noose card effect.
May I remind you, he's performed this all over the world......might be something to consider. Ted L |

Use the grandmother's necklace principle with a noose around a neck.

Mr. Biro is correct, I have one version in my Rope DVD, but have also used the loops of a vanishing bow knot as a noose with a 'double' hanging theme.

Well, due to time and choreography considerations, I just ended up doing a simple looped rope thru neck.
Thanks again to all for the suggestions. Todd

Sounds like trying to figure out this effect was a real Noosense!
But after hanging on several suggestions, you seem to have come up with the right solution and likely threw your audience for a loop when you did it. Congratulations Todsky!
