It's a same how much are currency has gone down in value the past 10 years.
It makes traveling overseas so much more expensive.

Our dollar is high relative to the US dollar right now. It makes buying from the US and traveling in the US very attractive. OTOH, it hurts our exports and our tourist industry. Sadly, none of us can have it both ways. John

Now, what's gold's purchasing power from the respective years?

Would that be to eliminate all currency issued by govts and only use gold in unregulated trade?

When I was the only virgin around in the 60s I worked in a tailors for a month for £5 a week. I think the year was 1967, as I recall Sargent Pepper being in the charts. Not sure what that £5 was equal to in $ then but: $32.10 in the year 2009 has the same "purchase power" as $5 in the year 1967. Mind you I was the best dressed virgin in town when I left.

Trade use to be called, or likely still is, comshaw (kahm-shah), not sure of a spelling. Great system for the criminal minded. We also ran slush funds, which today are known as 'pay day loans'.
