I am trying to find an effect that I saw performed back several years ago.....can't remember who did it, but it was an effect similar to Max Maven's "International Travel" effect....there are a variety of Christian symbols on a card....spectator selects one and does not reveal it. Magi asks them to start on a certain symbol, moves around several times (supposedly free choice), and the magi reveals where the spectator ended up. Anyone familiar with this effect/name/where it is available?

Duane Laflin has a very nice version of this published in one of his books.

There is a version of this in Duane Laflin's book Amazing Gospel Illusions You Can Make, it may be the same one that Revmike is referring to. It doesn't have Christian symbols but I'm guessing the method is the same. This one is entitled, The Right Conclusion, has choices such as love, fame, money, vacation, toys, health, and more. Finally, the person ends up on the square that says "Jesus Christ" on it. Aaron Gillam does this same routine with carpet squares on the floor and the child walks the choices. Really cool.

Thanks for the info guys! I've got some ideas for using the effect on a projected image with a powerpoint presentation.

That was indeed one of the things Aaron talked about in his presentation at Pittsburg that you can do this with a projection system so it plays very, very big.
Enjoy, but if you are looking for how it works, Doug gave you the correct book I was thinking of. Mike

OK, here's a cool "God thing" that I'd like to share. I am priveledged to be a volunteer ministry team leader for K-5th graders at our church, and because of this question, and because of Revmike's answer, I looked up that book last evening, and while I didn't use that specific object lesson, there was another one in that book that I used this morning at church. Had it not been for this thread, I wouldn't have thought about it, nor done it.
In effect, your questions and conversation had impact on about 230 kids this morning, and you didn't even know it! Thanks guys! doug |

After getting your replies, I got looking through some of my older books of Duane's, and I also found it in his "Automatic Gospel Magic" book...I had forgotten all about it! Thanks again guys...and Doug, glad to hear that you reached a lot of kids in a way they'll remember!

Not sure how much they'll remember, but it was a fun object lesson... And I say that not because of Duane's material, but me as a presenter...

It isn't important how much they get out of it, as long as they were exposed to it.
And as for you diminishing the message... Just do your best! God isn't comparing you to Duane Laflin, who is pretty good. He is pleased to see you use the gifts He gave you, to His Glory! A lot of folks start out (me included) assuming that if everyone to whom we speak, is not an instant convert to Christianity, that somehow we have failed. God's message to me, was that it isn't my job. It is his. I am only a planter. He will see that the crop comes in, In His time, and through those he chose for that job. So joyfully I Plant. Yes, at times, I am still a bit envious of those He allows to participate in the end game. But then I remember how important my job of planting that seed in the first place, really is. And I am honored. BroDavid aka Doctor Cognos

Very true. I've met many Christians who think it's there job to convert people. God never tells us to go out and convert people. We are told to go and preach the message of Christ. That's why I find it offensive when ministers, entertainers, evangelists keep track of the number of people who go up to receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour and use it to measure the success of their ministry. It has nothing to do with the success of their ministry, God will convict regardless of our talents or not. It's really unfair to measure the success of our ministries by counting heads, because that's God's glory we are trying to take credit for.
If we can get back to the attitude that we are only required, and are only capable of preaching the message, then I believe God will be able to use us more. We tend to keep getting in the way rather than being a vessel. I also recognize that my talents as a magician isn't a gift from God. If it were a gift from God, I would of never needed to learn magic. I think we easily get this confused. A talent is something we aquire through practice and hard work, while a gift is something that God gives to us.
