Hi All,
In two previous posts, I asked about possible correlations between: 1) Card workers and chess: http://themagiccafe.com/forums/viewtopic......rum=2&52 2) Sleight of Hand and Martial Arts: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......rum=2&63 The replies were typically erudite, covering a wide spectrum of fascinating opinions. This third post in the series poses the question: are there any Card devotees who also have an interest in cooking? Someone I correspond with pointed out that cooking often requires reading and deciphering sometimes lengthy instructions & dozens of ingredients; preparation, organization, timing and presentation - to name but a few of the talents required to create a winning meal. Of course, there is also the deeper talent of practicing established recipes (methodologies) and becoming comfortable enough with the fundamental skills to experiment with jazz/fusion variations. To cook, either as a professional Chef or a passionate amateur, one must have excellent organizational skills. Good writing & speaking skills are also an asset, as cooks need to be able to clearly communicate with their customers (even if one’s customers are a table of friends at an informal dinner-party). Learning to cook and control a kitchen can be a long, hard process and requires specialized training, depending on one’s area of interest. It starts, not unlike card magic, with learning a required basic set of skills before branching off into particular directions. In addition to interpreting sometimes complex instructions and techniques, cooking often requires a heightened state of awareness and mental acuity. The cook must manage multiple and simultaneous actions that involve meticulous timing, avoiding mistakes (sharp blades are unforgiving), controlling various levels of heat, etc. Once the basic skills and methods are mastered, a cook may choose to specialize. This could mean a specific style of cooking, such as French or Italian, or selecting a subgroup to focus on, such as meats or baking. For baking, as an example, the cook would need to be well versed in dough, pastries, bread making, cakes, etc. Perfecting the above-noted skills is (perhaps) not dissimilar to perfecting a seamless Card effect. One studies and practices the granular step-by-step sections of the “recipe” and strives to create a seamless magical effect that has the right “taste.” Specialization and/or jazzing follow the long, hard discipline of learning the basics and progressively advancing over time. Do any of you have an interest in cooking, in either perfecting classic offerings or jazzing on a familiar dish? Is there in your opinion any validity to the idea that a correlation exists between the skills needed to become a disciplined, organized and successful cook and the skills & finesse needed to become a successful card magician?

The late Frank Garcia included a recipe in both Million Dollar Card Secrets and Super Subtle Card Secrets.

I love to cook. I'm no world-class chef - not remotely - but I know my way around the kitchen and have cooked some rather exotic meals that came out quite edible (and more than a few that, well, didn't).
I'm not sure that that skill transfers to skill at card magic (or vice-versa). |

Slydini was famous for his pasta. Eric Mead dabbles in the culinary arts...

I think I'd sooner blow ya away with my culinary prowess than my ability with a deck of cards!
I ENJOY both and DO both for ME first and foremost and those enjoying either of my abilities is just another bonus for me! MMc |

I do both - cook for my family - and entertain the audience - for them not myself. What I do for me is working out - lifting weights.

Lemme see, I cook a great egg sandwich. Hamburgers. I can boil hot dogs and whip up great tuna salad. But that's it.
I'd rather work on my HaLo Cut then try to figure out when a chicken breast is actually done. |

I've got approximately 400 cookbooks. Yeah, I like to cook.
