Hello everyone,
I need some advices. I'll have a magic show about one hour at one comedy club here in Taiwan. Before this, my show is usually about 30 minutes so it's my first time to perform an one man stand-up comedy magic for 1 hour. I have already some routines in my hand but I'm considering how to arrange them. Here is my thought currently: # Opening Line (some jokes, lines) # Jumbo Sucker Sliding Card Frame (an sucker effect like die box) # Cola Monte # Burnt Money Part.1 (Vanighing their money) # On the Mark by Mark Elsdon (Thought card in wallet) # Knife thru coat # Burnt Money Part.2 (Reapear their money in the wallet) (Is it not good to have 2 wallet trick?) Half time # Mugged by rich Marotta # The Thing by bill Abbott # "No" Gag (Pretend to read their mind) # Color Match (Teffific prediction effect) # Lethal by Bobby Motta It's my routine so far, and there are some in my list too: Giant B'wave, Spike, Instant Magician I don't know how to make them best arranged so now it seems I just put all the things together but not according to a specific theme. Can you give me some advices? The other question is that how to keep their attention for 1 hour. In my opinion, audience will be fatique in about 20-30 mins and then they are difficult to be make laugh. How can I keep their interest? Thank you in advance for all your kindly comments. YuYen

I would open with the Mugged routine. Are you a comic or a magician, why open with jokes.
You hold there interest by you being interesting and keeping them wanting to know what will come next. You can do that with a nice personality and your magic. Practice you material until it is second nature. This will let you concentrate on the audience. Stay connected with them and play off there responses. Comedy Clubs do not have half time breaks, you should continue until you are done. I don't know most the tricks you list so I cannot comment on order. Good Luck! |

I would be careful of your props. Most comedians don’t like magician’s because they (we) hide behind our props. A comedian just walks out on stage and talks and for the most part uses no props! Also if you have to leave you table (S) set up on the stage/platform don’t be surprised if one or more comedians pick up your props during their set. “What do we have here? OH LOOK….it’s a … what the ….it’s a FAKE KNIFE! LOL …. Let’s see what else we can find”. This is not good, and don’t think it won’t happen.
The people at a comedy club are there to LAUGH and drink. Keep that in mind and developed your act that brings more laughs. I would really try and just walk on stage/platform and preform. You would be surprised what you can put in a coat and hang behind your back. If anything reduce the act to a carryon bag/briefcase that you bring on stage/platform with you. I used to open with mugged and it played really well. You NEED a really good monologue for mugged and to open your set. To hook the people you need a common theme about yourself. Watch a great comedian and you will see that they make fun of themselves. The trick is to really look at yourself and find the one thing that you don’t like and talk about it. Are you fat, thin, bald, talk funny, have a funny hang up about something. Maybe you are really shy with the ladies or just dumb. You get the idea. This is the basic of starting a comedy act. Do not TELL jokes, just tell stories. Watch a great comedian and you will find no jokes. They just talk about things. It is the telling of the stories that we see the funny things. I would play off of this idea and put your act in that format. You do not need trick after trick after trick! Have a good funny monologue about yourself and weave your routines into it. I think that you will find that this may really be something the comedy club really wants. One hour at a comedy club is a long time. A one hour gig is usually for the big name of the night while the lesser known comedians getting around 15 minutes. This can really be a start for you. I wish you luck. Remember, keep them laughing. If you have liked my advice and would like to ask me a few things, please PM me. I once had a couple come up to me after a show and gave me a really good complement. They told me that my act was like watching a standup comedian and a magician rolled up into one. This brought a smile to my face and I never forgotten it. Monologue and acting is the key. Best Ray |

Thanks the great advices above, it really inspired me a lot.
As my character, I set my self as a magician rather than a comedian. I'd like to do a magic show like Michael Finney or Mac King. Thanks Ray, you really point out what I'm lacking of and what I should do to improve. That helps me a lot. "Most comedians don't like magician because they (we) hide behind our props." I like this one. And I should try to tell stories but not jokes, and talk more about myself. Thank you again! More advices are welcome! YuYen

Ray,
That was the best dang advice I've seen on the subject in long time. You condensed what would be in 3 books in one concise, practical, and real-world lesson. Thank you! Beano |

LOL Ray Posted: Mar 10, 2011 2:46am Here is a bit that I thought of many years ago and would play well at comedy clubs once you got everyone on your side. Mention about how those fancy famous magicians think they are so cool because they can float! That Chris Anus guy really thinks he is Mr. Magic! You say a few things that are funny and double meaning words and then tell everyone that you are going to show everyone that you are just as great as those OTHER guys. You motion for everyone to be quite as you concentrate. You then (after a pause) tell them that you WILL float right now and right here. Silent PLEASE!!!You shout. You stand center stage, motionless, concentrating and after a moment, say “I will float now”... Pause….. and then the people see the cuffs (pant legs of your trousers) rise upward toward your knees. Better luck next time…. So close yet so far. The best that you could do was make your pant legs float! It looks dumb as heck but I have done it and it gets laughs. R |

To make this type of thing really funny, you have to act as if you really believe that you can REALLY do these things. The comedy comes from this thinking and acting. Best Ray |
