We all eventually run into that annoying spectator who cant keep his or her mouth shut during a performance. I made up a deck that allows the loud mouth to be center stage, along with another, more polite audience member, for an effect that lets the heckler have it between the eyes.
In short, magician claims that certain personality types will always choose certain cards. Magician has "polite" spectator choose any card (no force) and place it face down on the table. Magician states that friendly and likable people always choose the 3 of diamonds and when spec reveals card, it is indeed the 3 of diamonds. Heckler then chooses any card and places it face down on the table. magician seems to have a hard time with the card as he cant really get a vibe on the hecklers personality. Magician asks heckler to turn over the card and in bold print the word **** is seen on an otherwise blank playing card. All faces of the deck are shown while magician scratches head and comments on never seeing that card in the deck before. I have made some of these decks for other magicians (easy to make, easy to perform) and have had some interesting feedback,to say the least. |

I would like to know in what social circles that these effects are performed where the magician belittles a spectator and can still get paying gigs. I have read how some people handle hecklers and I just wonder how in the world some people aren't "handled" more themselves.

And what if these people are regulars? They may be loud and obnoxious, but he/she may travel with a group of friends who all leave costing the bar money. Any if he is somewhat inebriated and thinks you are challenging him in any way, you can expect a hassle which will more often than not result in fist-a-cuffs. I just prefer to handle things like a gentleman is all.

I don't think I'd use the word "****". I'd probably use "*******" instead.

I don't think that peppermeat2000's schtick is that challenging. Plus, if they look offended in any way I just say "Just Kidding"... If these jerks are regulars and they leave...fine...you don't ever want to work in a place that allows drunks to mistreat magicians do you? The establishment needs to build a clientel that respects magicians and away with the riff raff. I've had many ****s buy me a cocktail after they see that no one is taking any of their **** (bad attitude). If all goes wrong and the dude wants to get rough, well the bouncers would love to toss this guy out. They LIVE for it. Entertainers are too busy entertaining to be bothered with RUDE people. If a club owner is catering to low lifes then he has no reason to hire a class act like all of the performers on this site.
Sorry about the rant. After 30 years and over 5,000 performances (not magic but still relevant) I do have some strong feelings about hecklers. I usually just say "When your IQ hits 20...SELL!!! And that takes care of it. Dave

Slim King understands the philosophy behind the Heckler Deck, and most importantly, the EXPERIENCE to understand my motivation for making the thing up in the first place. Unfortunately, we don't all perform at garden parties for the Queen of England or at fundraisers for the local convent. Believe it when Slim says that a bar owner or manager dosent want a heckler in his place making the PAID entertainer uncomfortable. If that entertainer is there to INCREASE business, it's more than worth it to have the idiot storm off and not return because the mean magician hurt his feelings. If the business equation works out the way it should, there will be a handful of new customers to take the jerk's place and will probably have a lot more class as well. Think about it - if the heckler didn't have a magician or other entertainer to take out their incompatibility with alcohol on, it would be a waitress, bartender, or other patron..not something a good manager wants.
