Yes.... for years I closed my bar act by tossing a deck of cards through the blades of a spinning ceiling fan. I have a whole chapter in my upcoming book about it.
May I say at this point...DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS. It is extremely dangerous to throw any thing through the blades of a spinning fan. You can cause serious damage and/or injury by doing this. Im not kidding. There are a couple of stories in the chapter that illustrate this.

When practicing this I would often loose the tack and didn't think it was safe for a bar or restaurant. So even if you don't through the deck thru a fan, isn't this still a bad idea? Do you have stories in your book where the tack is found in say someone's drink? PS I'm a big fan. Can you tell us more about your book and when it will be out?

Not sure about your concern of losing the tack. I have done this trick thousands of times, and while some strange things have happened.. I have never lost the tack...or lost track of it.. I would worry more about the deck, on its way back down, might strike someone as they look to see if you got it. Remember, Gravity is not just a good idea, it's the law.
There is nothing worse than missing.. so I would keep practicing til your success rate is better than 95%. Re: the toss? check the published material.. I think I cover the position in the Magical Arts Journal...which is available in a number of places including http://doceasonmagicshop.com you might also check the Mentzer book about Fechter.. I believe that is covered there. (I could be wrong.) not sure when this tome might come out. thanks for your kind words.

Goodness, an old thread ... an old effect.
Does anyone still perform this classic magic effect. A true class in its day. But is it still practical as a worker? |

I do it regularly in New York. With the tack and on about a 14 foot high ceiling.
One thing I found interesting. They DO make tacks that have blunt "points". They do NOT make the best choice for this effect LOL. Thankfully I found this out at home and not in front of an audience. I have done it thousands of times. It is just a killer effect. I can't imagine how you can actually lose the tack? I mean it is stuck IN the card and it is pretty hard to lose. I have never even heard of anyone losing it, much less often. When Charlie Schulien was teaching me the Card on the Wall, (The impetus of this effect.) he told me Matt used 2 tacks anyhow. One would stick to the wall and the other would fall down among the cards on the floor. I would NEVER imagine trying to throw it through a fan. The reason is not safety. The reason is Doc did it and did it SO well that I believe it should just stay with him! Talk about creative pioneering. I am however working on throwing them through a jet turbine LOL. Incidentally I will tell you the following. When I was working on this effect (Well the Card on the Wall version.) with Charlie I brought up the Doc Eason version. Told him about the fan and even showed one of the original VHS tapes of the effect to him. He said that it was NOT the same effect, it was so much more and SO much better! I believe he was absolutely right. The version Doc did for so long is in my eyes the ULTIMATE version of this effect.

Doc is not doubt the master of this. He did confess in a Genii Article that it was very prone to failure. He would sometimes have to re toss a few times thru the fan. It was worth the risk for him. Personally, I would rather go with better odds. I use the Ammar version with the wax. Works for me and yes, it is a classic.

I was doing it on the street for a while but most of the time I threw the deck up and don't know where it came down....
