From the time that I started collecting Tenyo magic to the writing of this post, THE HAUNTED has always been regarded as a highly coveted Tenyo collectible. I would like to underscore COLLECTIBLE, because it's certainly a let down as a trick in my opinion. With that said, I can see it's appeal, for one the trick has a great name, "THE HAUNTED" *spoken in your most diabolical voice*, the skeleton is also CUTE, now add an ornate and mysterious box and bingo! In my opinion, it's visually appealing!
Webster defines 'RARE' as: seldom occurring or found (UNCOMMON)|or|marked by unusual quality or appeal (DISTINCTIVE) Webster defines 'SCARCE' as: deficient in quantity or number compared with the demand, not plentiful or abundant Can someone provide any hard data that reasonably justifies why this Tenyo trick is so expensive? 1. Is it that production was low and the trick became notorious? 2. Is it that the trick has appeal for obvious reasons combined with #1? 3. Is it that the trick's appeal is fueled by some or both of 1# and 2# but the trick isn't in fact RARE (at least according to the definition above, with the exception of "unusual appeal")? This trick fascinates me, I've heard that the trick is RARE, VERY RARE, INCREDIBLY RARE, on and on, why? Is this true? Sales tactics? With nearly every collectible, there is a few or A "holy grail(s)" that reside so far above the rest of their brethren that even non-collectors are likely to have heard of the collectible. For instance, you don't have to collect baseball cards to know of the 1909-1911 T206 Honus Wagner baseball card, it's been plastered on several news mediums and is quite famous. There are MANY baseball cards far more rare than the Wagner (I've been a collector for 27 years), yet the Wagner carries unquestionable mystique. I fully realize it's impossible to foretell what will become the next Wagner, however, the properties and/or mysteries that fuel these items into exceptional notoriety are utterly fascinating. It's certainly one' s right to value or devalue something based on one's opinion, and I understand the merits of supply and demand, but what truly makes THE HAUNTED distinct amongst its peers? Is it possible that THE HAUNTED is the T206 Wagner of Tenyo Magic Collectibles? I'm certainly not trying to drive artificial demand here, I'm just very interested in getting to the bottom of why it's so commonly and widely expensive and seemingly illusive (or perhaps is). There is one unopened in package on eBay right now for a BIN of $500 or Best Offer, it seems insane to me, but so did the Wagner at $20,000 until I saw it fetch 2.8 million!. Incidentally, for any who cares, I've actually held one in my hand (encapsulated in lucite) that was badly creased, big deal, I know . Using my magical inclinations, I was hoping the owner would agree to a vanish, and subsequently, so would have I! . Didn't happen. Granted, one can ask anything they want for something, but are rates like this characteristic on eBay for this toy? I believe I read that one went for $300+ (going for and asking for are two very different things ;-). Sorry for the rambling, at the very least, if anyone cares to post to this trick's history and allure, perhaps this might be a useful thread for future buyers in deciding if the trick is "worth it" to them. Kind regards, Houdini103126 |

Hello
First I have just understand half of your text so sorry if my answer did not relate to the topic. I think It is not because there is one guy who sell his Haunting 500USD, we must imagine that it is rarer than another. Someone set a crazy price and the others are aligned artificially creating a wrong scarcity effect. But I have see more haunting on ebay than Mirage, diabolicus, nostradamus clock, ultra tube etc etc etc. I don't know if you have read my review for the haunting, if not you can find it on my blog. This trick is not fabulous... |

Agree with stereo...for the last 2-3 years I have been very alert in different auctions sites and I can say that The Haunting is not so uncommon as the other ones mentioned by stereo...
OK...is an attractive item but not so magical... |

Fully agree with what has been said above. The last one on Ebay sold for a litle over 100 USD I believe and they pop up regularly. By the way, as mentioned in other threads, The Haunting really isn't an effect you will perform a lot - it's just collectible, it's nice to have in your Tenyo display cabinet.

All true however I love the look of the trick nonetheless..... The skeleton is nicely molded and the colors are -unusually- attractive.

This is all good stuff.
So as stereo has said, THE HAUNTING is "artificially scarce". Can anyone speak to why they stopped making it? Anyone have an estimate of how many were produced? Cheers! |

I sometimes feel a lot of Tenyo items are "artificially scarce".

I felt at seeing towledge repeat this sentence, leaving the "" I had said something funny with a double sense and a miss translation. Sometimes the translation I write can be funny as if you write in French. I thought it was the case here. ^^

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all Tenyo items created initially in a limited production run, and then returned into production if the demand is incredibly high...e.g. Crystal Cleaver. I think it's a simple matter of economics. The Haunted may just not have been a very good seller in comparison to Tenyo's other releases, hence, it is now a rarity. But, I am no Tenyo expert. Just mentioning what I've heard.

In manufacturing it is pretty much standard policy to limit the initial production run to the needed number of units that produce the ideal cost per unit ratio. There is also a magic number that is the bare minimum to justify the set-up run. This covers molds, templates, labour, etc. I think that the Lads from Tenyo Elite can confirm this from their own experiences. Sort of a supply & demand rule. In "The Hauntings'," case, I believe that the demand was not particularly high. Also, I believe that Tenyo was not overly thrilled at the delicacy of the skeleton's body & had frequent broken models. There was no real solution as the body needed to remain fragile to facilitate its movements for the effect.
