My girlfriend came across this article...I had no idea that countries joining the EU had waived national sovereignty to the extent that it could be dictated that the Swedes could not sell a traditional food product in the confines of their own country, but apparently that's what could happen at the end of the year when their "cultural exemption" expires.

Lol. I was reading about surströmming yesterday. Inspired by an article I saw, something like what your gf found. Along the way, I came across this related video:

"The herring used to make it in Sweden contains so much carcinogenic dioxin and PCB, which it absorbs from its home in the Baltic Sea, that it would be illegal to sell under EU rules if not for a cultural exemption that is set to expire at the end of 2011."
That seems somewhat relevant to the discussion.

Well, I should say, not about the "why" to the extent that I'm not questioning whether there's a good reason not to sell it. Do we have trade agreements with international bodies as a result of which we can't sell an American product to Americans because the international body can prevent it due to health concerns? (to that extent, I agree, it's about the "why").

I believe in trade agreements like NAFTA the mirror image occurs. Countries cannot pass certain environmental laws if they desire, if they can be shown to limit free trade across countries.
From our friend Wikipedia: Quote: There is much concern in Canada over the provision that if something is sold even once as a commodity, the government cannot stop its sale in the future.[24] This applies to the water from Canada's lakes and rivers, fueling fears over the possible destruction of Canadian ecosystems and water supply.

But the MMT case is a different thing, right? That's an American company importing a product that the Canadian government thinks is dangerous and doesn't want in Canada. I get that. But the surstromming thing, as far as I can tell, is the EU telling Sweden that they can't make a Swedish product in Sweden and sell it to Swedes. No importing/exporting/free trading going on. That's the part that has caught my attention. Unless I'm misreading it and that's not what's happening.

The EU has its own Court of Justice, Central Bank, elected officials, Parliament, etc. I think in many ways, the EU and its member states are more akin to the United States and its states.

Will this affect lutefisk? Or is it effect? ***, that's confusing.
But seriously, will the lutefisk be ok? What about hakarl?

The imposition of EU-wide rules formulated by the apparatchiks in Brussels is wiping out many aspects of traditional food manufacture across Europe. Private small-scale distillation will disappear from France when the current license-holders die, as those licenses are no longer inheritable. I think cheeses will be drastically affected, as well.

The EU wouldn't "not allow" Japan to do anything, because it has no authority to "allow" or "not allow" Japan to sell a Japanese product to Japanese citizens. Japan is a sovereign nation. The reason I started the thread was that I was very surprised that they DO seem to have the authority to "allow" or "not allow" Sweden to. Apparently, countries' rights in Europe are going the way of states' rights in the USA.

Well, Lobo, if you read the early theorizing behind the EU project by Kojeve and others, it is quite transparently an attempt to create a new government of Europe that would eventually subsume and replace all of the national governments of Europe, and be itself set up as an unaccountable, self-perpetuating bureaucracy of the sort we would ordinarily call "Soviet," and that is indeed what is coming to pass.
