Greetings,
I recently posted this topic on the sidewalk shuffle, but realised that what works for sidewalk (amp, mounted speakers) probably does not work for restaurant/party so I was wondering does anyone use something to amplify their voice? I tend to lose my voice quickly and whilst I am doing some exercises recommended by a voice coach a headset (or better lapel mike) attached to a belt mounted amp is definitely something I am looking into. Does anybody use something like this and if so what? Many thanks, Danny |

Well if I was eating and a guy came up to me to show me magic with a microphone attached to his waist, Id find it very strange. The other factor is that, people may not be able to connect with you and feel comfortable do to you speaking through a mic, as opposed too talking on the same tone as them and being playful and etc.

No I don't use a Microphone! Close Up magic in a restaurant enviroment need to be intimate and close. A Microphone would break that sense of intimacy! -H

I was thinking a mic attached to the lapel. I lose my voice easily and restaurants are just too loud! I know of one pro who uses one for close up and restaurants, I'll see if I can find out what he uses.

Last year I was teaching a Level II CFA review course at the University of Toronto. My first day I walked in to the lecture hall: a room with tiered seating for about 300 students. The gentleman setting up the computer asked if I would be needing the lapel mike.
"No, I think I'll be fine." "Oh, so you'll be using the microphone on the lecturn?" There was a student in the far, upper left corner of the room. I looked at her. "Can you hear what I'm saying?" A small voice from the corner: "Yes." I looked at the gentleman. "I won't be needing a mike, thanks." "Oh, OK." I don't use a mike in my close-up work. |

Hi guys,
Thank you for your help. Using a microphone would not be my chosen route except for the fact that I need one I think. If you have a strong voice, then I am very happy for you, but I cannot make myself heard in a loud restaurant. My longer term goals include voice coaching, but in the meantime some sort of electronics would help I think. Really I should have rephrased the question. "If you use a lapel mike which one do you use". Note to self: think first then write |

To avoid losing your voice, make sure that you're not dehydrated and coat your throat with something that will protect it. I use Vitamin C drops or throat drops, to coat my throat with corn syrup and/or sugar. This can help to keep your throat from getting raw. If you start to lose your voice, get another drink of water, and put another drop between your cheek and gum.
I'd never consider a microphone when performing close-up. In fact, some banquet audiences wonder why I use a mike at all. Voice training can teach how to project your voice, without yelling, saving your voice. |

I don't think it would be the best of ideas.

Close-up no
Because sometimes I want to fragment the audience and purposely perform for a few at a time, besides... it's hard to do hopping halves at a big round table that is loaded with plates and flowers, where the people sitting on the opposite side of the table can see. On any stand-up show with over 12 people yes. (two, a handheld and a lav) I use the handheld microphone to interview volunteers (who may not speak loud enough) and it helps to keep the show moving if the audience is laughing (or you have hecklers) because it allows me to overcome the moment and move on. Yes people can hear me a hundred fifty feet away but we're not at the Globe Theatre, these are modern times. Consider this, people can hear you yelling across the mall to your friend - so why do a lot of people use their cellphone to make contact even when they're in shouting distance? Technology... use it.

I like to use a megaphone for close up.

Can you hear me now?
"Oh you don't want to see any magic tonight? that's too bad because you will HEAR me throughout your entire stay. Enjoy your meal...because you won't be enjoying conversation!" If you have to ask about using a mic in a restaurant the answer probably isn't going to help you anyways...just sayin. |

I think we should move this thread to the comedy magic section
