I am wondering what is the best way to book restaurant gigs or cruise ships, trade shows without having to cold call which I have done following a script from a fellow magician. I've sent out mailers/flyers w/no success.
Is their an agent I can contact I live in the Denver, Co area. |

There are a number of books on getting work at restaurants and cruise ships. Cruise ships are more stage acts, then close-up. Trade show are very difficult, if you are speaking about indurtrial trade show. Cold calling is the best method for restaurants and trade shows, it is just getting to the right person at the right time. Then make repeat sales calls.
Agents are difficult to find. If you do they usually want to see you in action. So it is kind of a 'catch 22' you need the job 1st so they can get an idea of your talent, then they may want to represent you. Can you tell a little more about your sending mailers out, usually you need to send out several times so they get use to seeing your material. Remember if you get a .01% return your mailers, then it is considered an effective mailer. So you have to send out a large amount to get results. I see you do not have a web site listed, you need this as well in todays market. Video would be a big plus as well. |

I'm interested in your statement that a .01% return is good. Really? 1 in 10,000. When I've done mail outs to schools in the UK I get a 1 - 2% response rate. Only the repeat nature of the business justifies the mailing and publishing costs. With a much smaller return rate your asking price would have to rise considerably.

I knew a man who kept saying "pliers, pincers, scissors". He was speaking in tongs.

You are actually inquiring about 3 different markets here. I would search on each one of them here on the Café and you will find some tips and ideas.
Each will require a different approach. B

Penny (a large retail chain of stores here in the USA) talk about their advertising budget. How they look at return on investment and sales. I am sure if you are getting 1 and 2% on your mailings that are target marketed to a specific customer, then your mailing piece has a superior response to it. The OP did not give any details, and looking at his other post, is just considering entering the market of performing. He, as stated posed a question of different markets, so I responed with what would be for a mass mailing to all 3 markets with a general mailing piece. |

I HIGHLY recommend Bruce Kalver's "REstaurant Portfolio" for getting yourself booked in restaurants, and you can get it for next to nothing here:

With Copperfield as a "mentor" I would think he has some suggestions as to how this stuff gets done.

You cannot gain something for nothing in this business, and this is a business like any other sole proprietorship.
Magic is a tough career, and it takes, not shortcuts, but blood, sweat, tears, time, savvy, effort, and guts. And this is just on the business end. Oh, and it also takes money wisely invested in a team of experts and mentors to do it well. Maybe one third of your time is put into the "show" part and two thirds into the "business" part. No shortcuts, like agents or anyone else to pick up the slack. Involve everyone and their time, wife, family, kids, baby, friends, foes, neighbors. Anyone who can make calls (yes, you've got to cold or warm call!) lick envelopes, follow-up, follow-up, and follow-up. Then, when someone is interested in your shows, they've got to be --not only top class and in your style-- they must be marketed as first class. Meaning look at the top pros promo videos, then look at the content/quality of your promo. You reap what you sow, so get on the stick, slick up your marketing and get on that phone. My (not mean, but serious) two-cents. Walt |

Great post Walt. The only thing I can add that I haven't seen is get out there, get involved in something, and get known. It's who you know, what you know, and what you do.
