I bought a CO2 jet a few weeks back, but haven't used it yet. I read on many sites that you cannot touch the CO2 and should be about 2 meters away from it to be safe.
I remember Lance Burton using it in his Satan's seat production and Cyril using it to appear after his 'Shooting cloth' vanish and I am sure that both of them were in contact with the smoke? Is there anyone using CO2 jets that can provice me with some more info? Thanks! Roy. |

Hey Roy.. here's the deal. With any cryogenic effect there is a risk of burns of you're in contact or too close a proximity to the outlet port. Just being in the fog blast won't hurt at all and in fact is pretty refreshing! If you're using LCO2 (Liquid) you will get a better effect but it is also harder and more expensive to work with. Most lower end CO2 jets just use a regular 20 lb cylinder and require very high humidity to work well but are relatively safe as long as you're about a foot or so from the jet. Lance was using a big 5' LCO2 Dewer just behind the prop. LN2 (Liquid Nitrogen) is even better but again... much more expensive.
If you're in a very humid environment, the smaller units are very cool and look ok. If not, they will be mostly invisible and useless.

On Dan Sperry's tour this Spring we used a cryo-jet on the reappearance box that shot straight up at him with no issues.
