Just when I thought the Mismade Flag was as "done" as it could be, Wiz Kid Wilhelmina takes a new look at it from her 9-year-old perspective and inexperienced view of magic as it is and magic as it could be and breathes new life into it for me. Her version is called "Hooray For the Red, White and Blue!" and can be found in The Wizards' Journal #21.
So what's new? She uses the same old set of mismade flags (Red and white, miscolored parts, and standard American Flag) plus the mandatory starting with an 11 inch red, white and blue silk. But that is about all you will recognize. She uses Hank Moorehouse's idea of using three young helpers from the audience to hold the silks, but she turns them into soldiers and gives them some drill commands that add to the humor of the situation. Then the kid holding the blue silk keeps dropping it and finally "kidnaps" it so it can't be used in the first transformation of the flag. That's all good stuff, but what makes the magicians in my family (and as you know, there are quite a few) sit up and pay attention is when she performs the flag transformations in a tube made from a small piece of cellophane about the size of a #10 envelope. You can see right through it and into it as she pushes the silks inside one end and blows them out the other end, transformed into the various flags. The helpers participate in a fireworks ending when the American flag appears, although no fire is used. You might want to check this out before Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, Flag Day and performing for patriotic organizations.

Your enthusiasm is contagious, Spellbinder.
It sounds like a really nice variation to the traditional Mismade Flag Routine. I wonder what Wiz Kid Wilhelmina will come up by the time she's a teenager? Thanks for sharing!

Wow, sounds like a great routine. I like that idea of the transformation happening in a translucent tube.

That's a transparent tube, not translucent. We are currently helping her experiment with clear plastic mailing tubes so the tube doesn't have to be rolled and unrolled, which tends to put crinkle marks in the plastic. The e-Book will be updated with any new variations she comes up with. We are hoping she will perform the effect at a Band Concert being held at her dad's high school shortly after Memorial Day and we will try to get some video if it happens.
