Is the dollar going to crash? Almost definitely. Is the american govt going to eat some humble pie over it, and go back to a gold standard? When was the last time a govt admitted such a huge mistake, taken credit for demolishing the economy, and/or actually corrected the mistake?

I think what is on the cards is not money at all but a ration card system.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

There's not enough gold in the world for us to go back onto the gold standard.

Most people would welcome 50-cent gas and similar prices; they wouldn't, however, welcome the return of wages to similar 1970s-levels.

Growing up my dad worked for $2 per hour in a factory, with union benefits and everything. With that money he supported a wife and 4 kids, bought a new car every few years, and bought 2 houses. We took long cross country trips every couple of years, the whole family. Try to do that now, even earning $12 per hour. It can't be done.
Manipulated markets are the difference. Every single bubble and recession we have suffered through has been 100% man-made. And it all became possible when the gold standard was relaxed and the Federal Reserve (NOT a federal agency btw, but a private for-profit company) was put in charge. Thomas Jefferson himself had some classic quotes about central banking that are just as true as ever. |

That is hardly a surprise. Economies are an entirely man-made construct. Despite the terms bull and bear markets, neither bovine nor carnivorous mammals have any real input into financial systems. There were bubbles and recessions well before there was a Federal Reserve or the Gold Standard was relaxed. Thomas Jefferson presided over 2 of them himself. I used to make this false equation myself - it's an easy mistake, but these days you don't have to crank the car to start it, it has a CD player and airbags - it's a whole new and more expensive beast. The house has indoor plumbing - telephones and internet and that bloody newfangled wireless with pictures thing - television. I wonder how much of that could have been afforded on $2 an hour. |

We didn't have internet (duh), but we certainly had indoor plumbing and a color TV. We even had a washer and dryer, and bikes for the kids, and magic sets for me, and 2 horses, and...

I might be older than Chance. I know we didn't have a color tv for quite some time and I remember we had a washer with a wringer set into the top (because I got my hand caught in it!)

Hey I'm only 53 and I remember my grandmother using one of the old wringer type of washing machines. I also grew up with black and white TV. The grandparents had a colour console TV. But we weren't well off enough ourselves to afford one. It wasn't until 1988 that the wife and I bought our first colour television.
