I will be going to pharmacy school in St. Louis this fall and I plan on busking to make money. I won't be allowed a car my first year so I really need a way to carry my gear. This includes my waiter stand, my table top, my sign that hangs from the table top, and my props. How do you guys carry all this when you don't have access to a vehicle?

I use one of these, but you can get them at Costco for around 28 bucks.

IMO, there's nothing better than this. Best $100 I've spent:
If I'm not walking in with just my briefcase I use this. The image tells the story about all the configurations. I've also used it to move my daughter in and out of college and my son uses it all the time as a go-kart with his friends. I even turned it upside-down and used it as a table at an outdoor festival gig. The thing has a million uses and collapses up nice and small. Different sizes use different wheels. see which one is best for you. http://www.multicart.com/

You can by-pass all this and work from one little case...like a doctors bag...or work from your pockets...

Clay,
Kozmo's rig on "The Art of Street Performing, Vol. 2" and "Tales from the Streets" will give you some ideas. These DVDs are excellent. Regards, Nate |

Originally I used to carry my table, stand and suitcase under my arm and take the city bus downtown in clown make up. Can't believe I did that for a number of years.

Once again...Frank, you are the man! I've been struggling with this same issue. How heavy is this little wonder cart?

That is a really good idea. I was thinking of getting a tactical molle back pack and rigging up some sort of molle attachment to carry my stuff but that cart might work better. Would I be able to store that easily in the limited space of a dorm room? Also would pulling that around make for a crowded sidewalk because that could be a hassle.

Last century, in the days before suitcases had wheels built on them, somebody invented little trolleys a bit like Rotton's post hyperlink. They are basically light pipe framework. They collapse to a tiny thing maybe 2 feet high and 1 foot wide and about 6 inches thick. I've picked up mine in 2nd hand shops. They used to be strapped to the outside of a suitcase during flights, train trips etc. They will carry 1 small suitcase and a doctor's bag on top of that. I have three of them. If you've got more gear than that, you'll have trouble getting stuff on and off buses if you have only 1 seat to yourself. And if you do have more gear than that and insist on taking it, better get a link so you can have the bus driver tow your wagon behind his bus!!
The presentation makes the magic.

You're going to put your PA system, speaker stands, a gallon of water, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and your lunch in your doctor's bag (or your pockets) when you get a busking gig at a fair/festival, sporting event and/or 300 yards from your car? Of course it's on wheels and rolls like a dream so for my money, it's essentially weightless and makes everything you put on it weightless as well.

Greetings and Salutations,
I've got something like Rotten's, except it's got bigger wheels. Works great! I think I got it from Lowe's for, like, $40. Best money I've ever spent. Carries my tray jack, table top, cooler and stool. Working street fests, I carry my magic in a backpack that I hang over the handle. A single bungee cord keeps the whole load secure. I think mine's rated for 200 pounds but never put anything like that kind of load on it. Now, if I had to haul a PA, too, I'd go Frank's route. I worked in a university photo department and we loaned the same carts to photo students who checked out large lighting gear rigs ... they're easy to work with, very stable and can haul a ton. IMO this is the best folding cart at any price, and it's only $99 bucks anyway. If you stay local and you have a car and lots of gear, do what Frank does. If you travel by bus, plane, or train like me and don't have so much stuff as Frank, this is your best bet. Even comes with free shipping.

I use the same dolly that Rotten uses, got it from Lowes for under 30 bucks. However, the cart/dolly that Frank shows is a dream. One of our club members uses one & can't say enough about it. It's now on my list of "must-haves." Thought about a doctor's bag but couldn't find one big enough! (Sorry, Nick, just could resist.)

I actually used that dolly but beware of the one with the plastic "gear mechanism" that folds the wheels in and out.
I only used it once or twice before the "gear mechanism" failed. The last time I used it, I had to drag my rig thru the dirt at an outdoor event because the wheels kept collapsing in on themselves.

Tool box with decorations, canvas bag for the bucket and a folding table under the arm. I'm good to go... on the bus!
