I use the bold approach.
" I was going to make a lady float in the air tonight, but I'm afraid I couldn't get the forklift through the side stage door. I was going to do this ring trick, but then the Fox TV network showed this ridiculous ring with a hole in it. It might have been true over a 100 years ago , but I don't stoop to such nonsense. I bang the ring around to show the dull thud it makes and then I toss it onto the floor, and now I'm going to do my modern version , using solid rings ." It's very bold. I 've even had kids with small sets of rings asking me how mine work without a key ring. I don' t claim to be the first performer to do this. Give it a try ...it works like a charm! If I feel the need to discuss the show properly, I try to get them on my side..." Don't you hate the way the narrator talks to you as if you were an idiot? I mean I never say that this is magic, I don't expect anyone to think I have psycic powers, It's just entertainment. So why does three quarters of his commentary have to do with, "The magician wants you to think that he can do .....?" Anyway, If you watch those programs, you'll love this, remember the rising card with all the mechanisms inside, I've actually got one here. (Do Geoff Mcbride's New age rising card) Would you like to see the mechanism? They always say yes. I then hand out the deck, no gimmicks, no mechanism normal deck. I then explain that a lot of stuff was just made up for the series. They see a trick and try to copy it with bits made by the T.V. company prop department, so in fact those aren't the real methods, and they are conning the public, in much the same way that they accuse magicians of doing.

Darryl and Andy both give good examples of what to do to counteract types of exposure.
Instead of getting all incensed about it, use it to your advantage! Use it to "prove" that the exposure was wrong. Good stuff there! cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

I often am asked about the exposed things. I laugh and say, "Remember, a magician is there to fool you...make you think something that isn't true. Here is another fine example."
Or something of that nature. Make them think the Masked Magician is "fooling" them into believing those are real methods. More than occasionally the person who asked about it will be poked by a friend who says, "See, I told you it wasn't ______ (fill in explination of choice)!!" Just my method... |

I always say "yeah, so did I!", and get on with things. Say it in a light-hearted manner and they usually shut up.
