Magicbyswh, do you remember the hanging chad fiasco associated with the last U.S. Presidential election?

I have to say that I don't completely understand the arguement about not performing this around election time. Before responding, I went and looked up the aforementioned response by Mr. Close himself in his new book. (You forced me to jump ahead. I just picked this up from him at the IBM Convention and just started it last night, from page 1)
I have a lot of respect for Michael Close and everything he has done for magic. I think the Pothole Trick may have been one of his finest, if not the finest thing he routined. I have stated in this post previously that this routine has booked me quite a few shows because of the way that I leave my business card with them. For that alone, I am extremely grateful for him releasing his pet routine of his. I only wish I was aware of his concerns while I had the chance to speak with him at the convention. With that being said...I posted almost 6 months ago, that I changed my routine in 2000 to poke fun at the election and got quite a bit of mileage out of it. It was just the opposite for me. I guess what concerns me is that your audience is not supposed to know about the "hanging chad" concept that makes the Pothole trick work. They are to believe that the first hole is completely round and gone. Only to be replaced and moved to another. I have never once had anyone question me or suggest a "hanging chad" concept. I would never doubt anything Mike Close brings to the table, but have to respectfully disagree on this issue. The Pothole trick was a great routine for me during the late 2000 early 2001 timeframe when I did that patter, and have flirted with the idea of temporarily bringing it back, as to what we hope to avoid this year. I had a similar converstion with Michael Finney in early 2001 when I had a chance to session with him. I told him that I was doing a variation of his 6 card repeat from the old Stevens Comedy Magic tape, and had recently changed my routine to poke fun at the 2000 elections and the way that the kept recounting the ballots. I even threw a gimmicked card in the middle that had holes punched all over it on the next to last repeat. I then pulled out a large magnifying glass to poke fun at the infamous picture of the one guy studying the butterfly ballot like he had not the slightest clue in the world. He thought it was a funny idea. Maybe I'm wrong....but going strictly from experience and not having a problem, I am curious to know how many people questioned Mr. Close on the hanging chad concept. |

Michael, I agree with you 100%.
My previous posting was just to explain what was meant by "don't perform the effect around election time," not to agree with it. In my opinion, you're smart to disagree with Michael Close, not because I also disagree, but because if you agree with everything any magician says, no matter who that magician is, it means you're not thinking. Larry D. P.S. - Clever idea on the 6-card repeat! |

IMHO I don't believe that the hanging chad issue should ever come up in this routine, period. HOle punches are so common place in every office and most homes. The hole is visible and can be felt. From the spectators point of view you punched a hole in one business card moved it around and then moved iot to a second card. You then give him the card.
WHERE IS THE ISSUE? |

I think people would rather forget about the whole hanging chad fiasco anyway.

I have to second Michael Dustman's comments.
I have been using an voting theme for the PT this year. When I introduce the paper punch as the Florida Method people will even say "Oh yeah the hanging chad" or "Watch out for hanging chads" as their humorous contribution but following this and at the end of the routine when the hole has moved to another 'ballot' no one has ever claimed to know how it is done and no one has ever brought up hanging chads as a solution. This seems to be a case of being so open about the true method that it is discounted and the moving hole at the end becomes the focus of wonder. Perhaps it plays to the assumption that one would not use such an obvious (?), known method. This is one of the best routines I do and I will forever be grateful to Michael Close for this and so many other routines he has allowed us to use.
Trying to die young as late as possible!
