Hi all
I am living in London at the moment and would like to go out to some bars and get some experience performing for the general public. However, this is a pretty daunting prospect to do on my own, and it occurred to me that there just has to be other magicians in London with the same issue. So I wondered if any other magicians (particularly people in their twenties, like me) would be interested in meeting up somewhere in central London, going round some bars to get some practice in. I reckon if there is a small group of us, then it will be easier to get over the initial awkwardness of approaching people, and we can help each other improve our approaches etc. If you are interested, then either pm me or reply to this post. Tom |

It seems that, of the 8 million people in London, not many of them post on the Magic Café.
Ah well. |

Hay Fei I live in New Zealand now but use to live in London. I think it be great to meet up with other magicans and go out and blast tricks all over the place. Also just go and do it. If you have somthing visaul I normaly use a single rope routine or juggling. Use this visaul thing and as pepole show intrest bring in other effects. This is a great approch for parks. I sit in Cafés and do orgarmi and that's a way in as well.
The south bank london any one can busk there. don't feel you have to do big circel acts. A little sign saying magic and play with somthing to get pepole attion (Bubbles are good). you could make a little money as well. Ifyou do go out on the streets this blog is worth a read, It is for buskers but there a lot that just applies to being on the street. http://jimmytalksalot.blogspot.com/ let us know how it gose. I am visting London in December and if you want to meet up have a beer and hit the streets that will be cool.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

'Jimmy talks a lot' is an awesome magician and cool guy. I have chatted to him in Covent Garden a good few times. If you want to do street magic you should watch him. He does 'real' street magic proper stuff, great crowd reactions.
What you seem to be thinking of is strolling close-up magic? Not 'street magic' There are many magician who have a 'residency' in bars and clubs, that do close-up. You might get in trouble just going round doing close-up randomly in bars. Also not being mean, but its guy doing stuff like that, which can cost us work and give proper bar magicians a bad rep. You might be a good magician but, unless you are meant to be there it might not be a great idea. If you want to get in practice, arrange to do free shows for local charity events, local fairs etc. Go round and do magic for the crowds and people at tables. This will help with your confidence as well, because you know you are meant to be there. That being said there is nothing wrong with going out with a group of buddies, magic ones or regular ones to a bar or club and having a 'magic jam'. But stay at your table, show your mates your new tricks you have been working on. People will notice, some will probably approach you and ask to see something. A group of girls might even ask you to join their table, you might get a few phones numbers. The manager might see this and you might get a paid regular 'meant to be there' gig. All these things will help with you confidence and 'awkwardness' and help you learn the dynamics of 'strolling magic'. I like David Blaine, but he doesn't do 'street magic' as so much 'magic on the street'. There is a big difference. |
