My Dad is 94, sharp as a tack, a bit of a technophobe, okay eyesight, bad hearing. He has a laptop which he uses for email, can never find his photos on it, doesn't know how to Internet. Thinking of buying an iPad for him for the e-book reader and magazines, as well as the email and photos. Looked at the Kindle but the buttons are way too small. What do you think?

Good for him, my father, and mother-in-law stopped reading at about 90 years old.

If he can't find photos (a simple task) on his lap top, he might not be able to integrate the Apple syncing process.. Is there a folder for all his photos on the desktop of his laptop?

If you're willing to do a bit of initial setup and some occasional care and feeding then I think it's an excellent idea.
There's something intuitive about touch interfaces (to be sure, not limited to just iPad) that cuts through technophobia in a lot of cases. Morever, there aren't features of full blown PC operating systems, like a file system, that can further put a technophobe off. |

I think it'd be great. I love the iPad, and it's very intuitive. He'd have no problems accessing stuff. For photos, you either have to sync to a computer or you can buy the iPad photo connector, which works very well. But after iOS 5 this fall, photos will sync to the cloud, so if the iPad is linked to a Mac the syncing will be automatic.
The only big negative I have with the iPad is the glass keyboard, which turns me from a fast typist to a two-fingered pecker. But for everything else it's great. |

But, of course, you know him best.

Bring him into an apple store, if possible, and have him mess around with it. It's pretty user friendly.
Tom, your comment about it being easy to look at photos was just plain rude. Implying he can't do something so easy...

Maybe I read it wrong. "If he can't find photos (a simple task) on his lap top" seemed to mean that its a very simple thing to do, something anyone should be able to figure out

Landmark meant that his father would probibly have an easier time using a touch screen instead of using a keyboard.

Do have him play with the iPad in the Apple store first, if you can, but I'm almost certain he'll find it even easier to use than his laptop.
For the record, I'm typing this on an iPad 2 right now.

Of course, by purchasing any Apple product you are consenting for Steve Jobs to take your first born child. Unless you can guess his secret warlock name. Everybody knows that.

Thanks for the responses. I took no offense from Tom, he was just echoing my statement that my Dad was not comfortable with computers and was taking that into account. We decided to give it a try, but keep it real simple by just having a few apps visible, so as not to overwhelm him..
