I saw this story recommended by Bill Palmer years ago, and I just found it recently online. It's about a magician who travels the countryside performing and unwisely decides to reveal his secrets at the end of his career. I really enjoyed the characters, the storytelling techniques, and various themes including the mysteries of creation--or the natural order, if you prefer--and death as well as the relationship between the artist and his audience, particulary regarding the exposure of the magician's secrets and the response of the people who seem to love and respect him.
I will tell you that the author Charles Beaumont is known for writing Twilight Zone episodes, just to get you in the mood. Go to page 88 to read the story: Selected Stories

Thanks
FWIW did that experiment of "telling people" once - just with a few extended family - and watched what was in their eyes change as mystery and the "hope of more" became "understanding based on verifiable knowledge of what is". I strongly suggest performing this experiment to our beginners so they can proceed with their studies with a deep sense of what it is this craft offers audiences. Also the Greg Egan story TAP for those who seek to distinguish the sort of knowing one can get from text from the sort of knowing one can gain by way of social experience.
