Hello All,
I have only recently joined the Café. I have been "lurking" for quite a while, but decided that it be time to join and start participating. I have been doing magic for close to two years, but have been doing quite a lot of practicing in that time. I have gone somewhat slowly through the royal road of card magic, as well as a wide assortment of DVDs. Through all of this I have found that I possess the skill required to do many of the technical moves and the charisma required to perform, but I have yet figured out how to develop a routine. All of the books and videos I have gone through teach "tricks", or even entire routines, but I have not been taught how to make my own. I want to make a show, around 20 mins to 1/2 an hour. Does anyone know a Book or DVD that's focus is on Routining rather then "tricks"? Thanks in advance, Nick |

Nick,
Welcome! One of the "sticky notes" here on the Café has a very long descrption of routining for several types of shows. I'll have to search for it...but it may be under the "little Darlings" forum.

Nick,
Welcome to the Café! Since you are working with cards, I suggest Card College Light. This book includes all self working card tricks - and they are organized into sets of 3 so that one flows to the next. They are great tricks, that can be enhanced with false shuffles or cuts, and provides an instant routine. Will also give you a sense of what a good set feels like. Good luck, Hudson |

Thanks a lot, I will surely take a look both at the topic and the book.

I'm so glad that I stuck my head in here... those links are good to go back through and re-read them to get you back on track.
Sorry I had to point that out, now back to the real reason for being here... Welcome Nick! As you can see the Café is full of great information now it’s up to you to take it and run with it!

Hello Nick,
There are two books I have read through and found to be useful in planning a show and routine. They are "Magic and Showmanship" by Henning Nelms and "The Creative Magician’s Handbook: A Guide to Tricks, Illusions, and Performance" by Marvin Kaye. They should give you a good foundation to work from, and after you have your show together and perform it a few times, I recommend reading again just as a way to critique yourself. Good luck and welcome to the Café! Bradley |

Bradley,
Are these books still in print, to your knowledge?

I found my formating routines and coming up with creative prestions really lept forward after reading Beyond Deception by Tobias Beckwith. Not suer if it is rigth for what you requier but have a look. I think its well worth a read.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Yellowcustard, I think that book is more geared towards looking into ways of exploring things creatively rather than defining how one routines per se. Although I do agree that it would indirectly help ones routines I don’t think it is what Nickmally is looking for. Great book tho.

Joshua Jay has two books that I know of. A card book and a general magic book. Check out that general book. There are tons of beginner and hidden gem tricks in there that he teaches, plus at the end of the book, he gives ideas as to how to put those tricks into shows for stage, close-up, kids, etc.

Mike,
To the best of my knowledge the books are still being printed. I am not sure where I found them, but I believe that I purchased one of them from Barnes and Noble while the other was from a used book store. I did a quick search and found that they can be purchased through amazon.com. Hope this helps Bradley |

Thanks Bradley. I went there and requested that the publisher make them available in Kindle format. Hopefully, they'll listen!
