United Online Web Services owns your user name, any associated password, e-mail addresses, website and any domain name (unless you purchased the complete rights to the entire domain name) So yes - if you don't purchase the domain - they own it. BUT, you CAN purchase the domain name. Do you seriously expect a company to obtain a domain so you can use it for free, then give it to you? Have you ever heard - You get what you pay for? I agree with StarrPower. If you can't afford to present a professional image, perhaps you shouldn't try to present an image at all. |

Guys avoid godaddy for hosting...
think of the net like a neighborhood.. if your a childrens entertainer you don't put your store net to ADULT only venues and expect the soccer moms to rush into your place... Godaddy has a bad rep for allowing hundreds of spammers host with them.. and I have seen it many times where a person is getting pnalized due to other sites on the same IP being a BAD site case in point... had a guy 3 weeks ago (landscaper) having a issue ranking a page for a local event (family friendly event).. did some digging.. with a reverse lookup by IP address there where about 800 sites on that address AT GODADDY.. with about 500 of them being for little blue pills... he was being penalized for "family friendly" because of the neighborhood he was in... Moved him to hostgator (bluehost is GOOD as well) I believe the coupon code at hostgator is 1cent to get your first 30 days for 1 penny

Here's a strange idea for you: I host and build most of my sites through Weebly. (Yes...I hate the name too.) But here's my reasoning:
1) I already have enough in my tiny little brain. I don't really want to learn more coding. Been there...struggled through it. The site I built in Dreamweaver took me weeks to get to a point where I was okay with it. (www.theseriouslyfunnymagicguy.com) 2) A few years later, my wife found Weebly. It's true that you don't have the same freedom to do ANYTHING you want...but the tools they provide are remarkable. Vast numbers of templates to start from -- and a "drag and drop" menu that allows for almost anything I want to do. I made these sites much more quickly (not counting the Photoshop work): http://www.theparanormalcompany.com was built in two days. http://www.HeavyMental-ism.com and http://www.magicpendulums.com were almost as quick...along with several others that are quite useful to me. I have other sites that deal specifically with children's magic in my city, a book I've written and other projects. I maintain and change these sites frequently -- and have never had a breath of a problem at Weebly. 3) Weebly is under $200 a year. You still register your domains with a company like Go Daddy (Much cheaper to do so than with Weebly) -- but you can construct your sites and host up to TEN of them -- all within the same package. You can post video, do PayPal, have shopping carts as well as doing custom coding if you REALLY want to. Obviously you still need to have a sense of design, an ability to generate graphics -- and to write your own copy. Weebly just makes the literal construction, revision and publishing of the site much easier. Just a note -- I have no interest in Weebly financially or personally. But it really works well for me, so I thought I'd tell you guys about it. Way back in time, I tried finding "free" sites -- and I found that you get what you pay for. Just a thought. Hope it's useful to you, Ed. David

And just to clarify... I use godaddy to REGISTER domain names.. just not to host (cause ya don't have any control over the neighborhood they shove ya in)
---- yeah weebly is easy to use, but wordpress doesn't have that huge of a learning curve and is SOO much more powerful heck I would even be willing to start doing wordpress tutorials if that would help just to get people to move over (My Youtube channel will start having WP training on it soon)

Mike, I do not understand this "neighborhood" thing you are discussing. How might one go about checking their websites to see what other types of sites are on the same IP address? I was under the impression that IP addresses are unique. What am I missing? Please elaborate ... this is interesting.

I use domaintools.com
the free search will show you how many sites your sharing the IP with but you have to have a paid account to see who they are.. (I pay for 1 month when I need it, as I only need it a few times a year) as far as Unique.. a Mac address is unique to individual hardware.. IP addresses are localized but shared ex: an IP address can only be on one computer at a time (they can move), there can even be multiple IP addresses on the computer at once.. but those IP's cannot be anywhere else.. a typical webservr has MANY IP addresses running.. (I use 12 on my server) and balances sites equaly across them I am currently hosting about 50 sites but I am on a vritual server (meaning there are others like me that use the same hardware) so the IP address that my main site is on shares it with 500+ other sites where this can go wrong... GOOGLE sees all... (online that is) and Google will try to error on the safe side for the person SEARCHING not the company providing content.. so if you end up on the same IP as a site that IS NOT family friendly and you are providing content that appears to be for kids.. then Google will penalize your site (usualy a -30 listing, meaning if your normaly in position 3 you drop to 33 "page 4") (I hope this is making some since) I like bluehot and hostgator because they work hard on not allowing sites that will flag these automated issues (they don't happen often but when they do, its a PAIN to figure out why rankings are suffering and what is going on) Godaddy's hosting filters out "Adult" sites but will host sites that are not considered "family friendly" and sites that SPAM.. both of which can put you in the wrong neighborhood (did that answer the ? at all? I'm having problems coming up with a new angle so I can explain it differently)
