Maybe you would be happier with a theatrical director who gives you notes about performances so you can keep your eye on the audience and doing your job while they provide you the "audience view" without the pain of self reflection. A few times through this dialog can cure many ails in magic: Them: "that looks odd and I don't know what you are attempting to do" You: "it's just a move - I'll tell them what I wan them to know" Them: "just for a moment forget the trick part of the process and show me what you would do if you could do real magic" * You: "okay but how is the trick going to work now" Them: "method is your concern, mine is focus and clarity of action" You: "but I like doing the moves" Them: "I understand you like what you like and when you perform for others it still has to work for them, so try something different" You: "okay how about this (does simple vanish using a servante and wand tap) Them: "great - it looked like you picked up the ball and after you tapped your hand the ball was gone". You: "darn now I have to rework my routines" Them: "that's just part of scripting, in regular theater we have blocking and dialog and all sorts of challenges like that - hang in there and keep trying things" * So there you go - IMHO much nicer than just seeing what you do and not being able to not notice all the hesitations, tells, awkward actions, unmotivated fussing... Written to those who don't want to be lousy (with a nod to Burns).
