Hi everyone!!
My name is Jeff and Im 27 years old. Im a nursing student but Ive always wanted to be a magician. I started doing magic when I was younger but then stopped for some reason. I recently got back into it last august when I got suckered into a free "magic show" at universal studios, but found out it was just a 10 minute commercial to buy their products. None the less it re sparked my love for magic and Ive been addicted ever since. I really want to do magic for fun right now. Maybe something like street magic for random people just to put smiles on their faces and such. The big problem I have is that I get really nervous when I perform in public. I always feel like they are going to figure out what Im doing and not like it. Im hoping to get over my fears so I can gain more confidence when I perform, so any tips you guys have to help get over that would be amazing. Thanks again and I look forward to learning much much more about this amazing art form. Jeff |

Welcome JBCloseUpMagic,
Most people are nervous when they start so don't feel badly. I was a nervous wreck. Competent practice helps. Try to get in a Magic Club or smaller group (2 or 3 is fine) and help each other by checking angles giving good feedback and support. Once you feel you can perform an effect well and you have imagined performing it well for people (and imagined them loving it) the next step is to "just do it". Experience really helps with nerves. Those who face this fear go on. If you don't there is always impressing yourself in the mirror (for the rest of your life) LOL. I know you'll make the right choice. -Mary Mowder |

Hey seems like a lot of people have the same story of always aloved magic in their past and now, a little bit older, trying to get back into it.
I too am a beginner and nervous performing to others just because I am a perfectionist. All the people here are great but if you need any help or support just PM me. |

Yea I have the same problem Weisszach, everything HAS to be perfect or I feel like Im not doing it good enough. I think I have to realize that lay people really have no idea whats going on, but its hard to get past that hump. Thank you for the help offer though, Ill be sure to PM you some time

Hey Jb -- I respect your determination to get things perfect, afterall, if you tip the technique of the trick, you've taken the gift of that trick away from your spectator. Even so, I agree that there's a point where your performance is ready to go and the best practice then it doing it live with spectators. Best wishes on your efforts and I hope you stay as focused on being as great as you can be.

@JB -- After about 30 years of practicing/performing magic on and off, I still get nervous performing any effect for someone (even fellow magicians), unless I know it so well I can do it in my sleep -- and I work with "ghosts"!

Welcome Jeff! Mine's the same story as Jimmy Cards...only I stuck around Chicagoland until 2003. I live in Landrum, South Carolina, but when asked where I'm from I still say Chicago. (If you tell someone you're from the South they automatically lower your IQ by 100 points!)
Cheers!
