A lot of people are aware that among my 'idols' in escapes, the name Michael Griffin appears quite frequently. Well, this past weekend, April 20-21, I was in Indianapolis visiting some friends. For those of you aware of what has happened to me in recent months understand why I needed to get out of town for a few days. Well, I communicate with Michael via e-mail occasionally, and he sent me a message about an antique padlock show that was goin on in Indy that weekend. My friends had previous obligations for most of Saturday, so I found my way to the lock show to wander around, wish, dream, and yes, even drool over some of the stuff they had. Well, when I got there, everyone kept asking me if I was one of the local magicians, to which I answered "no". The reason they asked was because I was wearing a shirt that identified me as a magician. I told one of the people running the show how I found out about it and she said, "You know Michael is here, don't you? He's at lunch right now, but his table is right over there." Well, not wanting to let opportunity pass me by, of course, I hung around until he returned. He returned from lunch, and I finally got to meet him! I'll tell you, I felt like a kid in a candy store! BUT, it gets better!! While chatting with him, he happens to mention that Mark Cannon and Joe Fox are also there. I get to meet these guys too! Not only do I get to meet them, I was most fortunate to get to spend the entire afternoon with them!! So, I spent almost five hours in the company of some of the names I have read but never thought I'd get the chance to ever meet! I was supposed to have a late lunch with a friend that day, but when he called, I begged off lunch to stay and talk with these guys...I had no idea if/when I'd ever get the chance to talk with them again all in the same room. Now, it STILL gets better! I was then invited to attend the show they were having that night, but, alas, that I could not do. I promised my friends that I would go to Illusions that night. But, they did invite me to the after show get together they were having, and of course, I went! So, I then spent half the night talking with these guys again! If you can imagine, hours of chit chat about handcuffs, ropes, chains, straitjackets and the like...and no one there thought it was out of the ordinary! I had my ADA-100's with me, and Mark Cannon went into something like salesman mode and was explaining the ins and outs of the cuffs. IT WAS GREAT!!! It made the trip to Indianapolis worth every minute I spent on the road to get there! Now, the drive back...that's another story!

Fantastic!
Sounds like it was even worth driving to, and back from Indianapolis! That was a rare opportunity and it is terrific that you were able to connect up that way!! There is something very special about being in the company of great performers in your art, who treat you as an equal (even though you know that you are not! Or may in your case Margarette, you are.) But still, very heady stuff!!! What a Blessing! Thanks for sharing it. BroDavid

Margarette,
Hay, don't sell yourself short! You're a talented, seasoned, professional performer who's quite knowledgeable! You are just too humble!!! And I want to thank you publicly for all the advice and suggestions you've given me for my escape act. I really appreciate your willingness to help me! Joe and Mark told me about having met you in Indy (after you played that trick on them for me- thanks again!) and they said they really liked you. Joe Fox told me that you really knew your stuff! (so true) They tell me that they enjoyed spending time with you as much as you enjoyed spending it with them. Boy, I wish I could have been there with you all, but hay, someone has to have a "real" job in this bunch! ;^) Michael Griffin emailed me after you met with him in Indy, and he told me that he thought you were "cool"! You must have made some impression on him. Now, how about you being his opening act some time? Hay, it could happen! Also, Gay Blackstone Jr said that she would like to see your performance tape to consider you for a slot in the "Women in Magic" week at the Castle. Which week that will be is still undecided but it's looking like maybe the 4th quarter of this year. Let me know, okay? Best to you always, Joe |
