Highlights some of the MANY problems with the current IP system.
Rather futile to target the companies as the article suggests, as they are only enabled by their use of the govt, which the article acknowledges in the very first paragraph.

Much ado about nothing, IMO, and I disagree with GDW's post. I would expect that at the very least, Glenn, you don't perceive some of the alleged problems as problems, for instance:
"Amazon requires users to identify themselves to get an e-book." Surely, that's not a problem; Amazon owns it, they can set the terms and conditions of a sale. Those who voluntarily choose to identify themselves can purchase an e-book, and those who choose not to don't have to. "Amazon 'requires' the user to accept a restrictive license..." Again, what's the problem? Those who choose to accept the license can buy the e-book, and those who don't can go the traditional book route. "The format is secret, and only proprietary user-restricting software..." So? Those who don't want to buy the software that reads e-books don't have to. Amazon clearly believed that there was a market for those who don't mind buying the software to read the e-books, and obviously they were correct. Free market at work. Regarding the "secret" format; surely there's no justification for forcing them to reveal the format?

The fuss over this stuff is astounding. If folks don't want to support media providers who use DRM and don't buy their product, the authors and publishers will move to something else. You don't need to offer a retinal scan or blood sample to open a paper book to read, but the technology exists to make that so. What of it?
If I look at used book prices and see the flow of books at local libraries the problem seems almost moot, at least for now IMHO.

There are few capitalist enterprises that I love more than a used bookstore. In fact, none spring to mind at the moment.

Lobo, I don't disagree with what you said. I didn't say everything they listed was tied to IP, or, as you pointed out, even a problem.
The main thing would be the enforcement of drm related things, and "proprietary" technologies.
