I am from Billings, and am looking to try some street performing. I do some magic/sideshow/balloon animals so I'm pretty versatile. I have some family I want to visit in Portland, and thought I'd try to make some money at the http://www.portlandsaturdaymarket.com does anyone else do this? Does it cost a fee? DO you need permission? Can you do it for a few weeks only? Any info is greatly appreciated!

HEY Kameron!! I grew up in Great Falls MT (Air Force Brat) so happy to see a MT boy here. I have not been to Portland but whereever I go I set up and busk whenever I see a crowd. I have never had to pay for a vacation in years and have always come home with more money than I left with. The Motto I believe in is: "it's far easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission." The worst that will happen is a cop will tell you that "it's illegal to do that" and you just say you are traveling thru and very sorry that you didn't know the rules. The authorities are happy, you should have gotten a couple of hats and try some place else.

Hi Kameron,
I live in Portland and enjoy going to Saturday Market whenever I have some time on the weekend. There are a lot of performers and quite a few spots to perform. They used to have a sign-up form posted with the spots and times and then the buskers would use that to regulate themselves. The form is no longer posted where it used to be but I suspect something like it still exists but it's just not out like it used to be. Buskers are definitely allowed and to me it's all part of the market's character. I would estimate there are probably at least 6 performing at the same time at different areas of the market. Some are definitely better than others. Unfortunately, most are on the lower end of the quality scale. It wouldn't hurt to call the number on the website and ask about the process so you're not surprised when you first show up. Post back when you'll be performing and I'll see if I can make it down to watch. -Brian |

You could go to the waterfront, which is actually outside the Saturday Market. There are plenty of crowds there.

I've worked the Saturday market more than a few times and it's always been a great and rewarding experience, (esp given the fact that PDX has strippers and steaks Sunday, ask a local, they know where to direct you).
Just show up, sign up, and do your thing. Always remember, 99% of the people giving you advice on this site have no practical experience whatsoever in actually going out and performing. Their timidity is your gain. |
