I'm heading to vegas later in the year. Looking forward to going back to the book shop and couple of other spots.
I've never stayed in a hotel/casino there (stayed with buddies last time) but I'm travelling with my wife so we thought we'd do things properly. What's your pick for a couple of nights accommodation? |

The most important question to answer: what does your lovely wife enjoy doing?
My wife's inclinations are the ONLY criteria that really matter when we are in Vegas!
"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time." "The dog did nothing in the night-time." "That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes. |

Yea, depends on budget also. Staying somewhere really nice will be great if your wife likes that kind of thing but if she'll sleep anywhere (my favourite kind of girl) then you can go for a mid-strip hotel and not spend a huge amount of money.

We both have the same tastes Mid-price, not too flash without being a dump and perhaps with a bit of history.
I kind of like the idea of the Flamingo but I've never been. |

I just went through this whole debate last fall. Here are two things you should consider:
1. The Strip? Or downtown (for historical reasons)? 2. Do you want a good view out of your hotel window? If so, then I have a few thoughts. Otherwise, just go, baby, go...! |

In my opinion, the Aria is the best place. It'S not too expensive, the wife will like the rooms with all the gizmos and you will get good poker, especially on friday nights. If you like tournaments, the structure and stack of the 50$ buy-in is very good. That's were I stay during the WSOP. It's on the strip so you can walk around and have a good time when not playing poker!

I agree with Slim. Aria's great. Venetian or Palazzo are nice too, if you can get a good enough deal to fit within your budget, which also depends whether you go week or weekend, holiday or not etc. |

Most of the hotels mentioned in this post do not have historical roots that speak to the old Vegas and those that do are not the kinds of places you would want to show your wife. Forget Fremont (downtown) – it is a fantastic place to visit, but do NOT stay there. I also agree with the poster re: the Flamingo. My wife and I love the Mirage...for a small mark-up, you can get a corner, Strip-view with a sweet view of the Volcano. It may sound a bit kitschy, but it is actually a lovely experience. One sees the entire strip, from south end to north, with the high desert mountains in the far distance. Please let us know what you decided and report back on your experiences! Have a go at Vegas!!!

As for not staying downtown. Take it from someone that is a native to Southern Nevada. You can stay down town. If you do The Golden Nugget (The rooms there are nice) would be the best place to stay. It's not in a bad area of Fremont Street either. Four Queens is ok. Fitz eh not bad but. Fremont Hotel casino is fine. Plaza hasn't reopened yet so I don't know about that. For safety reasons don't go walking on any side street off of Fremont after the sun has set. Anytime during the day use your best judgment. After dark you really don't want to walk further down Fremont much past where you would walk to catch that goes back up the Strip. Don't go past The Walgreen's that is on Fremont. You won't like it you will be asked for money by panhandlers. Plus the threat of getting mugged is greater if you venture any further. Yes this is kind of a dark view of the Down Town area but those are the facts.

I like the Mirage, also. Reasonably placed on the Strip, nice rooms. S&R used to perform there, so some magic history.

Leaning towards the nugget at this point.
It's got a bit of history, it's downtown and we can get a good price. |

If you want decent room rates don't come on a weekend or a holiday weekend. If you do you are going to spend much more than you need to on any room no matter what hotel it is. Sun-Thursday are when the rates are lower. If you have to come on a weekend. Be ready to pay out the nose for the room.

There is a reason many magic conventions choose Orleans. Orleans is very nice and prices can be low as $36/night during the week. Free shuttle service to the Strip.

The renovated Trop is phenomenal! Best value in Vegas, imho...
I'm a Vegas regular, and I can vouch for the location, pool, table minimums, sports book, etc. LOVE IT! Jimmy Fingers The Pope of Sin City |
