Hey guys,
I am thinking about my marketing structure. Right now I only do magic, but sooner or later (probably in about a year) I will add an aerial arts act to my portfolio, maybe a hulahoop act, too. Right now I have one website to promote my magic http://www.missedith.de which put quite a bit of work in it to have it rank well with google and its brothers. One strategy would be to use my existing website and just add the new acts to it. However, I am not sure if the visitors will still view me as an expert or just as a she-does-it-all(-badly). The pros: * The site will probably immediately rank a tick better than from a totally new domain. * I might be called even if the people don't know which show they want to book. * People might come to my site looking for a magician and booking my aerial tissue act. The cons: * The site will get quite big. It might be difficult for people to navigate. * If she does all this stuff - How can she be good at any of it? * opportunity costs of not using the keyword domain for my aerial arts, thus more difficult to rank really high in the future. Have it on two different domains: Pros: * easier ranking for my aerial act, even though competition isn't too hard in google. * being viewed as a solid performer in this area cons: |

I like your site, and while I don't know much about ranking I will give my opinion on the "Cons" you listed.
I think that the navigation can be dealt with if you limit the links on each page, and keep them consistent with the landing page. If you always have a "home" link, they will not get lost. I don't think that laypeople analyze what we do as much as we think they do. If you do a great aerial act, I don't think you should be shy about stating that. Others may disagree, but I don't think the "jack of all trades" label does much harm in the world of novelty acts. Another option would be to have a new domain, but link the two to each other. That way you get your rankings, and will not lose the traffic that goes to only one or the other. |

You could have two sites and link them.

I thought I just said that. Last paragraph. Get with the program, David, or I'm gonna have to come over there ...

As Starpower said, the world of novelty acts is a little different. Personally, I can't imagine having different pages for your different kinds of acts being any different than most magicians offering different services. For instance, see my services page http://www.brianmillermagic.com/Services.html You'll notice that I have four different kinds of services listed, and one of them ("Magic, philosophically speaking") has a link to an extended page of its own.
I think as an entertainer with multiple talents, you would be able to have one page on the navigation bar that is a kind of "services" or "shows" page, which lists your different acts with a brief description, each with a link to its own page of detailed information. |

I think it may depend on whether your different acts have a similar target Market or not. If you are aiming your ariel act at corporate upscale events, but your magic is for childrens parties having separate websites would be good. If your hula hoop act is in a burlesque adult style, but your magic is family friendly having them on the same website would be detrimental. If however the image and audiences you are aiming for are similar I think it's good to show the different things you can do on one site.
You could also have a general website showing all you do, and then separate one's for different markets. I have a general website showing everything, mainly aimed at agents, and also separate websites for children's parties and school workshops. Phil |

David Thiel: That's what I'd do if I had two different domains, of course.
Right now, I just registered these two domains for aerial arts, to be able to ask in a special SEO Forum. (If I hadn't registered them, some nifty wanna-be-SEO grabs my domains and maybe would try selling them back to me.) Even if I don't end up using them, I have them now. Just in case. ;-) BrianMillerMagic: You have a good point. But with different Domains I either would use the same home page with the little description on each site or have yet another domain for the big overview and general information. Since right now I only do magic, I just have one domain for magic. |
