A few years back in "The Linking Ring" magazine was a IN THE HANDS/Stand Up version of the Endless Chain.
I can no longer find this issue and was wondering if someone can pm me the instructions? Or does anyone know a source for a different version of this effect, in the hands? Thanks Shooz

NicholasD,
thanks for the response but I had worked on this routine for some time, then put it away. I would really like to find a copy of this so I can re-learn this routine, as it was well thought out. Can anyone help with this? Looking for a copy of this routine from "The Linking Ring" magazine from a few years back...could be 10 years! Thanks again Shooz

Nick Trost in Expert Gambling Tricks has the "Dennie Flynn Routine" which describes the method for doing fair catch left or right, neither side fast and both sides fast.

You can find a very good bibliography on the chain at my Scoundrels Wiki Site here:

Mr. Haydn,
Thanks so much for the link. I'll check it out...might find what I'm looking for or something else better. But I am still going to search out the effect from The Linking Ring magazine. If I find it I'll let you know so you can add to your bibliography if it's not there already. Shooz

Mark Strivings has recently released his handling called Endlessly Elevated... I have it but have not had the chance to go through it yet...

I've used to stand up version from the Ganson Teach in for years - It's much easier for a walkaround performer who doesn't have a table. Once you learn the set up for the chain you can apply it to any routine. The booklet is available from Lybrary.
Apocalypse has three or four versions, but I never changed from the Teach in one. Ian |

I believe the Linking Ring issue you are searching for is Ray Hyman`s in TLR Oct. 1986, Vol. 66, No. 10. It uses a handling that happens entirely in the hands.
Have fun, John

As Hey Thompson notes, a very good version , along with the patter, can be found in Robert E. Neale`s book Tricks of the Imagination.
Uses only the loop of string, rope or chain & uses no table, only the hands. Many variations including an advanced version where your volunteer, who has been let in on the secret and plays the part of your shill, is also bewildered at the end of the routine. Enjoy, John

I picked up the Mark DeSousa DVD on the chain last night. I haven't watched it yet, but I'm told he also does an "in the hands" routine.

If memory serves me, DeSousa shows how to make the pattern in the air, but still lays down the chain for the game.

That is true, and I thought it was that way for all the "in the air" patterns. It works the same way though. They can stick their hand through the loop in the air, and it will either fall away or drape around their wrist when you release the chain.

I have never liked the totally in the hands version. It would never play on the streets. No one would ever bet, because with the chain in the hands, the operator seems to have too much control. It looks like a confusing string puzzle, like Cat's Cradle, and people just shake their heads and give up.
If you can't get people to want to actually bet for real, then it is not as strong as the on the table versions. I have gotten people to bet on the tabled versions with no problem. In the air no one would put down a dime. Besides which, there is no way to prove the other choice would have caught, as you can in the tabled versions. This is something totally made up for magic performances, and not something ever done on the street for money. The tabled versions are great swindles and would still get the money today. |

A good point, but for walkaround magic gigs, it's great fun. I make the pattern and then hang the loops over each thumb. If you don't have a table, it's a nice alternative.
