Regan,
Autumn sings on stage but I'm not sure that you are into drums. Autumn in Alabama will need strings! Click here to view attached image. |

Bob, I love drums! We use 2....count 'em 2, Roland Dr-880 drum machines at our live gigs. I had to resort to the machines because my drummer....er, ex-drummer is incarcerated. It looks like he will be there for quite a while! Actually, he has not been my drummer since back in my metal daze, but after years with him I thought better about getting another drummer in my current band! LOL These machines are much more reliable, and they always show up for rehearsal when we need them! I'm sure Autumn would be reliable, but she wasn't available!
When I get a little better, and can get some extra time with Keesha we will try to see what we can do with the song. I have the title firmly written down! I have been really sick with bronchitis and laryngitis, and my voice is gone. I've been down for almost 2 weeks now. Barely a whisper, but it is gradually coming back. This bug actually hit me the day after my daughter's wedding. It hit her the same day. However, her voice went a few days before mine. I didn't even put her mic up at our last gig. At that time I still had a little bit of a voice left, so Tammy and I did all the vocals that night. However, it destroyed my voice and I was at a whisper by the end of the gig. Keesha seems to be almost over it....finally, but I am still pretty sick. Tammy started getting a sore throat yesterday, and is pretty bad today. Her initial symptoms mimic mine and Keesha's exactly, so I'm afraid she's going to be in for a long battle. It's the worst crud I have had for a while, and it is difficult to shake. I'm anxious to get well and start on the song. Regan

Regan,
I'm sure you aren't the first father of the bride to lose his voice! When the day comes, my daughter fears that I will yell, "Get that beast away from my baby!" Just poking fun at you! Lucy has the crud too. Doc catches all kinds of bugs from her clinic. She went to work today but left me my "to do" list. I hope that this iron hand I rule with here doesn't leave rust on the list. Autumn thinks my Indian name is "Runs with Scissors" but it is actually "Yes Deer". Well this is looking good. How large group will be performing this? We may need to plant another row of tomatoes to be ready for the crowd. Autumn ruled out serving company Possum Helper. You know that she is a vegetarian? She is in Memphis today and won't get to eat ribs! |

Bob, sorry it took me so long to respond. I didn't realize you had asked for an update. I finally have some news, so let me fill you in.
Sometime after Christmas I sat down with my guitar in an attempt to at least get this song started. I usually don't like to try and force my songwriting, but I had been so busy I just had not had a lot of time to spend on it, and because it had been so long I thought I would try to get something going. I came up with a melody and a verse, and I pitched it to Keesha. We worked on it and got the chorus, but I was not satisfied with it. It was not bad, but something just wasn't right. Anyway, we put it aside with intentions of getting back to it. Each time I would come across it in my notebook I would think on it and see if I could add anything to it, but I was kind of stuck, and so was Keesha. The fact that I wasn't happy with it made it difficult to find inspiration, and because of this neither of us were very driven to try and finish the song. Fast forward to this week. A couple of days ago an idea popped into my head. It was a musical idea, and I liked it a lot. I didn't have time to write at that moment, so I got my tape recorder (yes, I am still using one of those things) and saved it to tape so I wouldn't forget it. It kept playing in my mind off and on throughout the day, and when I got home I picked up my guitar and started expanding on the idea. The idea I had was basically just a musical 'hook' and I didn't need the tape to remember it because it stuck with me all day. (Which is not an easy task when you have a memory like mine!) I like song ideas when they stick in my mind! When I started playing it again, other ideas started flooding into my mind. I got the music and melody for a verse, and then the chorus. All of the sudden, I thought, "I wonder if this would work with Autumn In Alabama"? Almost instantly I realized that it would, so I started working with the lyrics. I took some of the lyrics that Keesha and me had written on the other song and reworked them and got this new version started. I couldn't wait to call Keesha and let her know. She came over that afternoon so we sat down and got to work on it. We didn't have long during this first session, but we got a lot done. Together we wrote most of the verses, the first pre-chorus and chorus #1 & #2. She came up with some background vocal ideas that really enhanced the song, IMO. We were stuck on the second pre-chorus and we needed to settle on the remainder of the song's arrangement after the second chorus. I could hardly wait until we could get together again, but I forced myself to so Keesha could work with me. She sent me a text the following day saying she had an idea for the second pre-chorus. I couldn't wait any longer so I got my guitar and started messing around with the song. I came up with the music & melody for a bridge, along with several arrangement possibilities and waited for Keesha to get home from work and come over so I could play them for her. She liked what I had come up with and we settled on the arrangement. I also pitched a few lyrical ideas to her for the bridge section. Again, we had only a short time to work together so we had to call the session off without the song being finished. Well, we are planning to get together this morning for some rehearsal, so hopefully we will have time to work on the song. We only like the bridge, and some of it is written, so maybe we can finish it today. Maybe we will soon have "Autumn In Alabama" written! Regan

Well, if you write the song I guess I HAVE to come to Alabama in Autumn! I will bring the coveted 'Golden Possum' trophies for close-up, parlor, and stage! (I want a 'Golden Possum' so bad I can't hardly stand it!)
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

Autumn, we finished the song Saturday. Thanks for the inspiration! I still do not know if we will get to come this year. I'm trying to get Bob to commit to singing it! He'll have to pull out that old, junk guitar he said he was going to give me someday!

Regan,
Do we need to make arrangements to show the Autumn in Alabama video? For these folks we'll need to show it in "Possum Vision". |

Well, Bob I'm not sure. Video production costs are very expensive...even more than audio! I'm not even sure I could afford one for "Possum Vision" right now!
Keesha and I did finish the song up. I thanked Autumn for the inspiration, and I thank you for the pokes and prods! I may have never started writing the song had you not put me on the spot. I hope you and Autumn will get to hear it someday, and I hope you guys will like it. Regan
