I'm working on David Roth's "Shell Coins Across" from New York Coin Magic #1 (what a series!). You end with just the shell in CP as the other coins are displayed.
Do I need to worry about distorting the shell edges with a CP? Of course, it depends how tight the CP is, I suppose. And would it be better to hold the coin with the coin face *on* your palm (shell facing out) or the coin face on the 'outside' (if that makes sense)? The shell is lighter than a coin, so I feel like I can use a fairly loose CP and still have a good grip - but even then I worry. -) Should I? Larry S. |

I think you would be doing a muscle pass before bending the shell.
I wouldn't worry about it. |

I have classic palmed a shell many many times and nothing went wrong.

Those things are stronger than you think. To bend it even by doing a muscle pass would take one heck of a terribly tight grip. That is, unless your s***l is a cheap stamped one... But if you have a well made one, then there is absolutely nothing to worry about. In fact, your CP should grip a coin tight enough for it to be totally secure, but light enough to be dislodged by a tap to the back of the hand. If you have coins in CP and you have a really tight grip, chances are your hand does not look all that natural as it should.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. The shell edge seems so thin, I was concerned. But I have a high quality shell set, so I should be all right.
Thanks again! Larry |

As others said, the metal is surprisingly strong. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I agree with those above. You will not bend a shell just by palming it. The shell is a great tool that can help create some amazing magical moments. QGood luck.

There is nothing to worry about...as mr.Roth says :"The classic Palm should be that light that if you hold your hand flat and give it a gentle tap the coin would fall" so nothing to worry about...No muscle passes though...hehe...His Shelled Coins Across is a great worker and I've yoused it for years...it will serve you well...
The things that are most real to me are the illusions which I create...everything else is quicksand...

On a related note. I went ahead a had my scotch and soda in my hand while I was walking up some stairs the other day. Needless to say I dropped it and it fell through the stairs and down onto the concrete below, maybe about 15 feet. It fell apart when it bounced off the stairs so both pieces hit the concrete below. Surprisingly there are no big marks and it still fits perfectly.

Aside from plain halves and a c/s that's the only gaff I have, so it would have been a real bummer to ruin it. Plus I just got it about a week ago. I (hopefully) learned a valuable lesson. |
