Jason Steffen is a particle physicist who works at Fermliab. He’s used his knowledge of complex systems and motion to develop an airplane boarding procedure that is more efficient than those currently in use:
In his method, first, alternate rows on one side of the plane board, but just the window seats. Then the other side boards, in alternate rows with one row between each passenger. Again, window seats only. Then back to the other side, with the middle seats this time. And so on. The result is a beautiful choreography as rows of passengers simultaneously stow their luggage and take their seats in tandem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla......XjEI8VmA

The start and end of the video was missing for me, so perhaps I missed something important. However ...
I was going to say, good luck with actually implementing that system. But then I thought up how it could be done. Just have the airline computer print "boarding sequence group numbers" on the boarding passes, and let people board in groups in sequence. So, maybe it will happen.

This plan also makes the erroneous assumption that everyone's carry-ons will fit in the overhead bins above their seats and that those fortunate souls who get to board first won't fill all the available storage with their bags.

Fermilab....I could tell you stories...worked there for years as a Guard. Brilliant people from all over. Used to round up escaped buffalo herds with our squad cars. Had to physically shove gawking Russian scientists into their houses to get them out of the upcoming tornados...we used to ride our bikes inside the accelerator tunnel to stop and lock, from the inside, all of the hatches along the 2 mile circle. Good times.
They collect the smart ones at Fermilab, so it's no surprise he thought up this good one. I wonder long it will take the airline industry to implement it. Certainly easy to do. Just do it. Work out the wrinkles on the fly. Of course, you'd have to let the 1st classers go first, before anything else starts...they have to get something for their extra loot. I've never understood why they don't seem to even load the rear of the plane first. They seem to seat boarding pass #1's first and at the front, clogging up the area. One clog at the front stops everyone...one at the back stops no one. anyway...on with the day....
