I will readily admit that I am far from the most sophisticated connoisseur of magic in the world, but I want to talk about the most memorable magic show I ever saw, and find out if anyone can tell me more about this style of magic.
I was on vacation in Belize at the time, and the magic show was a complete surprise to me. The music changed a little, and then one guy with a table was lit up near a wall....and he started to perform and dance along with his performance. There were not flashy costumes, or big illusions, or choreographed assistants. The two most memorable tricks were multiplying bottles and linking rings. But the presentation is what really made it amazing. The whole club was captivated by his show (and as far as I know, no one was there to see him--if a magic show was promoted that night, I was certainly not aware of it!). The crowd reacted with amazement, and it was literally the talk of the town (small island town) the next day. I'm nowhere near having my own show. I'm just learning, and right now I have school to deal with, but in my mind I keep planning a show that I will put together one day. Sometimes grand illusions pop into my head, and they do seem awesome, but this style of magic, performed basically surrounded (sometimes he was literally surrounded, other times he moved near a wall--now I understand that he was controlling his angles) in a nightclub style environment really sets my mind on fire. Is there a name for this type of magic? It isn't really stage, or parlor, or anything I'm aware of. It has its own unique set of attributes. Does anyone know of any magicians who currently specialize in this? I usually hate nightclubs (my arm was twisted into going that particular night), but I love watching a show in that environment! |

It's a form of small platform or cabaret style magic. Some manipulation and some not. Do you remember the name of the performer? Country of origin?

I really wish I knew the name of the performer, because he was really great and I'd make an effort to go and see him again. It was at a nightclub called Jaguar's on Ambergris Caye, Belize. I suspect he may be a Mexican magician, because the vast majority of the entertainment acts that I have seen brought to Belize (i.e. for 15 años parties and such) came from Southern Mexico, which is the closest place with a large enough population to see an entertainment industry developed. If anyone has any idea who this mystery performer might be, please tell me because I would love to correspond with him!
As I think about it more, perhaps why this act sticks out so much in my mind and why I like it so much is that this magician let the music do the talking. Literally, I never heard him say a single word. This could have been due to the fact that the crowd was made up of 50% English speakers, 50% Spanish speakers and really very few people who could speak both languages. But music is, as a general rule, more effective at evoking emotion than pure speech. Thanks very much for your response, Brad, I'm going to start reading more about cabaret magic! |
